Shame on us

Shame on patrons of Marion-Florence school district who are frustrated about how an inflammatory issue is being handled, or not handled, but don't have courage to confront the "elephant in the kitchen."

Parents are dumbfounded that nothing has been done about the issue. If it's true, that an elephant is there, they want it out of the kitchen (off the board of education).

Is this the kind of person (elephant) they want making decisions about our kids and our schools?

Let's go look. Is there an elephant in the kitchen? The board can't meet in "executive session" to discuss an elected official (that's the law). The official can resign. The public can recall an official. A wise decision would be for the county attorney (who also is an elected member of the BOE) to investigate and perhaps bring charges. Or, dispose of the matter entirely.

It's time to quit sweeping it under the rug. An elephant is much too large, if there actually is an elephant. Who knows?

So, shame on the BOE, the county attorney, and above all shame on patrons of the district who have a "why don't they" attitude and lack conviction to take action.

Patrons are willing to sit back and let someone else lead the charge. Many become indignant because "nobody" will act. Shame on the county attorney. Shame on the school board and administration.

We try to teach our children to make responsible choices and realize consequences for poor choices. If an adult, especially one in a position of authority and leadership, makes a poor choice and isn't held accountable, then we have a hard time justifying the value of consequences.

Who will shine light on the darkness? Shame on us if we don't. Shame on us all. And the consequences be damned.
