Shirley Smith

Shirley Marie Smith, 69, died Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

Born Feb. 24, 1934, in Hillsboro, she was the daughter of Charles Roy and Frieda (Rittgers) Smith.

On Nov. 4, 1951, she married Robert Smith in Hillsboro.

A homemaker, she was a "people" person who was well-known for helping others. Known to many as "Grandma Shirley," she had a special place in her life for children, enjoyed baby-sitting, and made each child feel special. She also enjoyed the beauty of flowers. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by a son, Don Smith.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Marion; a son, Terry Smith of Sterling, Va.; two brothers, Harold Smith of Independence, Mo., and Charles Smith of Wichita; and a half-sister, Leona Harrell of Sautee, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Larry Timm officiating.

Greg Carlson was vocalist and sang "Amazing Grace" and "Somewhere My Love." Wanda Williams was organist.

Casket bearers were Kevin Craig, Richard Smith, Jeff Soyez, Michel Soyez, and Greg Carlson.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with St. Luke Living Center and the Marion High School Athletic Department.
