Signs approved for Central Park

Soon, no one should have any doubts about what is or isn't allowed in Marion Central Park.

Monday, the Marion City Commission authorized City Administrator Dave Mayfield to purchase the necessary materials to create proper signage for the park.

Once the signs are up, park visitors will know skateboarding, roller blading, fishing and/or swimming in the spring is not allowed.

Mayfield said recently he met with park board members, utility director Harvey Sanders, and Don Hess about where signs should be placed and how other signage should be used.

It was decided to paint sidewalks with the message, "no skateboarding or roller blading."

"No fishing or swimming in the spring" signs will be placed on utility poles located on north and south ends of the spring, Mayfield said.

In other matters:

— Re-appointed Bud Pierce and Ralph Kreutziger to four-year-terms on Hilltop Manor board of directors.

— Transferred $25,011.51 of $37,572.86 from capitol improvement fund back to utility fund. The amount transferred previously was more than actually needed for the library project, Mayfield reported.

— Approved warrants amounting to $29,171.49, and payroll of $20,209.56.

— Heard from Mayfield that "Woody," a longtime fixture in Central Park was to be installed Tuesday, weather permitting.

— Approved a $10 credit on utility bills for homeowners decorating with Christmas lights as has been done in the past.

— Heard from Sanders that city crews had finished checking Christmas lights on buildings, a manhole had been lowered, temporary service had been installed at a duplex on Denver and Lawrence streets, the tree dump was burned Friday, a sewer main on Coble Street had been flushed, along with other items.

He also said inspectors had examined city line trucks and equipment like hot sticks, gears, and hoses. Some equipment was not up to code and will need to be destroyed and replaced.

He also reported there will be no trash pickup Nov. 28 or 29 for the Thankgiving holiday, and trash will only be picked up once next week.

— Heard from Economic Development Director Susan Cooper a ribbon cutting and first dollar of profit ceremony was to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Outlet. These events are sponsored jointly by the city and Marion Chamber of Commerce.

— Heard from Janet Marler, Marion librarian, it is children's week at the library and the train display is set up.
