Softball team ready for regionals

The Marion Warrior softball team continued its dominance this past week with six wins against three tough opponents, including Chapman High School, a highly touted 4A softball team.

Marion finished off Chapman 10-7 in game one and 6-5 in game two for their 10th and 11th straight wins.

With Megan Moore on the mound, the Warriors shut out Chapman in the first three innings of game one before allowing four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning.

Despite allowing seven runs, the Warriors compiled a big enough lead early in the game to fend off Chapman.

Marion scored a run in the first inning, five in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth, and a pair in the sixth inning to win by a margin of three runs.

Moore pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters while giving up eight hits, seven runs, and three earned runs.

Heidi Zogelman and Leann Thomas led the team offensively. Zogelman was 3-for-4 hitting with two RBIs and scored two runs, while Thomas was 3-for-4 scoring two runs.

In game two vs. Chapman, things got a little scary initially. Chapman rattled off five unanswered runs heading into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Warriors finally got on the board scoring a run.

But after holding Chapman scoreless in the next two innings, Marion began dropping an offensive attack on Chapman, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh to seal the victory.

Moore pitched game two and struck out five batters while allowing nine hits, five runs, and three earned runs.

Mindy Mastin was 4-for-4 hitting, driving in two runs and stealing a base. Krista Zogelman was 2-for-4, including a double and two runs scored.

Marion vs. Hesston

The Warriors made quick work of the Hesston Swathers Thursday afternoon in Hesston with two wins, 14-3 and 9-4.

Marion jumped out early and scored often in game one,amassing five runs in the first inning, three runs in the third inning, a run in the fourth, and five runs in the fifth inning.

Thomas shut down the Swathers, allowing only eight hits, three runs, and two earned runs, while striking out four batters.

Both Moore and Bowers were 2-for-4 hitting in the contest. Moore had an RBI and a stolen base, while Bowers stole two bases in the win.

In game two, it was much of the same.

Marion scored three runs in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh for a 9-4 win after allowing four Hesston runs.

Kara Holt took the mound in game two and struck out eight batters. She allowed seven hits and four runs, and three earned runs.

Mastin spearheaded the offensive attack for Marion with a 3-for-4 performance in the chalked square. She scored two runs and had a stolen base in the win.

Marion vs. Chase County

Marion tamed the Chase County Bulldogs April 6, 8-1 and 13-3.

Moore recorded 18 strikeouts over the course of the double header. She allowed just 13 hits in the two-game affair and only four runs total.

Caitlyn O'Dell was 3-for-4 in game one, including a triple and three RBIs.

Mastin led the way in game two, going 2-for-3, scoring two runs and driving in another.

The Warriors, now 20-2 overall, will challenge Herington Thursday at home before heading to Osage City for regional competition May 19 and 20.
