Softball team splits with Council Grove

Warriors to play

Friday at Hesston

The Marion softball team split games April 15 with the Council Grove Braves. The Warriors dropped the first game 5-3 and won the second 10-5.

The Braves struck first in the first inning of game one. Council Grove snared two hits and brought in a run to take a 1-0 lead.

After Megan Moore retired the next three batters in the second inning, the Warrior got on the scoreboard as Emmy Bowers trotted home for a 1-1 tie.

The Braves were held scoreless in innings two and three, but added three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

But the Warriors rallied back and added two runs in the sixth after a pair of scoreless innings. With one inning remaining, Marion trailed by one.

In the seventh inning, Council Grove added an insurance run and held the Warriors scoreless to take a 5-3 victory.

Moore pitched seven innings, giving up six hits, five runs and striking out nine batters.

Krista Zogelman and Emmy Bowers each went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run each. Caitlyn O'Dell was 3-for-3 on the afternoon.

In the second game, the Warriors came out with a vengeance.

Marion tacked on four quick runs to the Braves' one in the first inning.

The Warriors were held scoreless in the second, but Moore shut down batters for the next four innings.

Marion added a two runs over the third and fourth innings.

The Braves shut down the Warriors in the fifth inning, but in the sixth inning Marion scored three runs to take a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Council Grove battled back and scored four, but the Warriors held off the Braves and took a 10-5 win back to Marion.

Moore pitched all seven innings of the second game, striking out seven and surrendering seven hits and five runs. She also was 4-for-5 hitting with two runs scored, two RBIs, and two doubles in the win.

The Warriors hosted Salina Sacred Heart on Tuesday, and will play at Hesston on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
