The Centre girls' varsity came from behind Tuesday at Wakefield to defeat the Bombers, 37-33.

The lead changed several times during the hard-fought contest, and things were looking desperate for the Lady Cougars at the end of the third quarter. They trailed by eight points after leading 14-10 at halftime.

After scoring an abysmal six, eight, and four points consecutively in the first three quarters, their shooting improved considerably in the final quarter.

Seven players contributed a total of 19 points compared to seven by Wakefield for the four-point win.

Jill Fenske scored her only points of the game in the fourth quarter, including a field goal and three free throws.

Jackie Klenda and Megan Gutsch added a field goal and one free throw each, Ashley Griffith and Selena Seifert two free throws each, and Krista Heiser and Alyssa Luna one field goal each.

Wakefield's leading scorer, with 14 points, failed to score in the fourth quarter. No Centre player scored in double digits, but all worked together to produce the win.

Gutsch led with seven points. She also led at the boards with 12 rebounds. Klenda had eight rebounds and four assists, and Luna had three assists.

The victory was their sixth win of the season, improving their record to 5-1 in the Eisenhower League.

The junior varsity didn't fare as well. They were defeated 47-37.

The girls kept up with Wakefield in the first half, and the game was tied at 16-all going into the break.

Wakefield outscored Centre 15-8 in the third quarter to take a seven-point lead. A 16-13 fourth quarter deficit contributed to the 10-point loss.

Kylie Burhoop led scoring with 13 points. Samantha Alvarez had seven points and Amy Hajek six. Brooke Carlson had five rebounds.
