At least 30 people attended the annual noon luncheon Thursday of St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary.
Treasurer Eileen Sieger presented two $500 scholarships to Marion High School graduates Heidi Zogelman and Ashlee Moore.
Zogelman is the daughter of Nick and Sharon Zogelman. She plans to major in biology and music at Washburn University, Topeka, and go on to become a physician's assistant.
Moore is the daughter of Pat and Jandee Moore. She plans to attend Wichita State University and study to become a nurse.
St. Luke Hospital, St. Luke Living Center, and Marion County Home Health also contribute to the scholarship fund, Sieger said. At least one scholarship has been awarded every year since 1977.
Sieger said Moore's scholarship includes money from the Dr. James A. Wheeler Memorial Fund. It is awarded whenever enough money has accrued in the fund.
It was announced that Phyllis Melton contributed 5,573 embroidered tea towels to the auxiliary from the time she began making them in 1991 until her death this past month.
Chairman Janice Case reported that she and three other auxiliary members, Mary Alice Jolley, Lenore Dieter, and Dorothy Youk, attended the district meeting at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita.
Case reported on activities of the local chapter so far this year. Case said those attending the meeting were impressed with the accomplishments of St. Luke Auxiliary.
They include the following:
— two new steno-type chairs for the nurses' station.
— a bio-feedback machine for the physical therapy department.
— 20 books, "What to Expect the First Year," to be sent home with new mothers.
— a refrigerator for the clinic and board meeting room.
— a table and flowers to cheer the foyers of the living center and hospital.
— baby bibs for newborns.
— handmade quilt for a net profit of $623.
— many homemade articles for the hospital's gift case.
— birthday and holiday greetings sent to living center residents.
— $500 scholarship to a student entering a health-related field.
— Teddy bears made to be given to children in the emergency room or when needed.
— large Weber grill for living center and hospital.
Dieter said the new Health Insurance and Portability Assurance Act was discussed at the district meeting. She said volunteers are concerned that the new strict, privacy rules will limit volunteer work.
Jolley announced that the hospital gift case is desperately in need of more gift items. She said a lot of babies have been born recently, and the stock of gifts has been depleted. Anyone with handmade items of any kind is encouraged to donate them for the gift case.
