Friday's calendar almost always calls for bingo and baking, but early this afternoon, watching from our patio, some of us saw the Life Team helicopter lift off from the nearby pad. As we became visually involved in the moment, we cannot help but offer silent prayer for the crew, patient, and doctors involved in this medical situation.

We continued to "munch our way across the USA" that morning, baking an applesauce, raisin, nut cookie from Sheila Fox of Dover, the capital of Delaware. This recipe was an oldie, taken "off a box of Bisquick" by her grandmother. Irma's sister, Rosie Waner of Alba, Texas, joined us for coffee, cookie tasting, and critique time.

Our Sunday afternoon guest minister was the Rev. Josh Weisner of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Marion.

We really got pretty Monday morning because beautician Bonnie came a day early this week. If so desired, she and Khrista gave you "the works." Surely Marie Navrat and Ellen Darrow noticed the "transformations" when they arrived for afternoon activities.

Early Tuesday morning, workers were here to put the translucent cover on our new patio area. We have enjoyed watching the project unfold and will miss that outside activity.

An early frost and no geese or ducks on the water in the slough told Pa Ingalls it would be a "long winter" in the little shanty on the prairie. Our "seasoned" book clubbers seemed to agree.

Immediately following lunch, Frances and Alice helped throw together a corn salad recipe, a contest winner from Janet Kennedy of Mayetta. It looked and smelled very good.

When Magdalen Dvorak arrived for crafts, the project was oatmeal sesame crackers. Our crafty bakers stirred up and patted out the mixture into somewhat round shapes and used sunflower kernels in lieu of sesame (because we had these). We served the chilled salad with the baked crackers and mentally patted ourselves on the back.

The family of Agnes Bina brought homemade white and chocolate cakes and an ice cream cake, plus two other flavors of ice cream to the living center Wednesday evening as we all celebrated Agnes' 88th birthday. Nine of her 12 children were here, Rosie, Julie, Lavern, Dean, Ray, Marion, Janie, Mary, and Martin, her sister Margaret Jirak, many other family members and some friends — approximately 30. Counting our 32 residents and several staff members, that was a large party!

Shirley Bowers was here for hymn singing Thursday morning and shortly before noon was joined by Joann Fitzpatrick and they joined Khrista and the lunch bunch, who all joined Zimmerman's staff and customers dining downtown.
