Les and Berniece Broadstreet celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Sunday afternoon with a reception in our large-windowed dining room. Invited guests were residents and staff. Special guests were the Broadstreets' son, Gail, and grandson, Jeremy, Carol Broadstreet, Jennifer, Jenevieve, Joeb, and Jade Corona, Anita Hancock, Gary and Shirley Carlson, Shirley Bowers, Bettie Batt, Reign and Marlene Anduss, and Al and Gloria Ash.
The main table was beautifully decorated with pink roses and the serving table, cake, and punch were served in pink and lavender colors.
Everyone joined in singing "Happy Anniversary." After a few remarks, Les sang, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" and "Roses are Red My Love," to his bride.
Our congratulations to Les and Berniece, whose actual wedding date was Oct. 22, 68 years ago.
Either we proved we're not ready "for a healthy and nutritious cookie" or we totally misread the recipe. The cookies we made Friday morning received a "healthy" thumbs-down from the majority. We had "munched our way" to Pierre, S.D., but we'll never visit those "high fiber" confections again. 'Nuff said.
Our large group of bingo players and caller Lois Winter had visitors during Friday afternoon's session. Daughter Irene Waylan, daughter-in-law Raelene Hajek, and great-granddaughter Maggie McLean, members of Mildred's family, had some snacks, lemonade, and coffee with us.
Pastor Phil Smith of Valley and Lincolnville United Methodist churches was our Sunday afternoon guest minister.
It truly was pretty-up time Monday morning because hair care with beautician Bonnie was happening also, a day early this week.
A Czech festival is on the activity calendar for later in the week. That afternoon, Amelia, Ruby, Mildred, Irma, and Khrista worked as a kolache making team, producing the ethnic sweet rolls to be served at the event. They used three flavors of filling, the traditional prune, poppy seed and apricot.
Book club spent Tuesday morning with Pa, Laura, and Carrie Ingalls as they observed the 4th of July in DeSmet, the little town on the prairie. The most exciting event of the day was watching Almanzo Wilder's team of big, brown Morgan horses, Lady and David win he buggy race in spite of the fact that they pulled a heavy peddler's wagon.
The afternoon was spent using our craftiness drawing faces on some spirit jug jack-o-lanterns, which are very effective in the afternoons when the sun shines on them through our west windows. We also created some origami bats, which fly above the orange-colored jugs in the same windows.
