St. Luke Living Center: Living center world turns as usual

Our living center world turned pretty much as usual Wednesday and Thursday, having prayer group, current events (the reading of the Marion County Record), pretty-up, lunch bunch, and hymn sing.

We heated up the oven Friday morning and entrusted our cookie making project to Betty Crocker. Using her butter pecan cake mixes and a good measure of finely chopped pecans, we turned out several dozen great-smelling, good-tasting cookies in a jiffy.

We all know Friday afternoon means bingo time and this week Magdalen Dvorak and her great-granddaughter, Kara Druse were our volunteer callers. Even though we play for big stakes, the highlight of the afternoon is when Magdalen opens the container of her wonderful, homemade kolaches and makes sure we all get one. This week the fruit filling was apricot.

Perhaps we weren't expected to hear him, but Keith Allison also was here Friday afternoon, tuning the piano. As he tuned he also played familiar songs and that was when we eavesdropped.

We welcomed the Rev. Don Mashburn from Strassburg church as our guest minister Sunday afternoon and had the additional good fortune of Anita Hancock's talented presence.

Amelia Vinduska was the guest of honor Sunday at a big party in Pilsen and already has received 115 birthday cards. Her 100th birthday was July 10.

The morning of July 4 we mixed up several pans of blueberry and raspberry Jell-O and found room in the refrigerator to chill them. After lunch we layered the blue and red cubes and whipped topping into clear plastic cups and back into the fridge they went. During our Independence Day book club hour we shared 4th of July memories, looked at pictures of the many symbols of our great country, listened to the words of Emma Lazarus inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, and especially enjoyed the poem, "Woman, Man and Child," written by Chief Master Sgt. Billy N. Cooper.

As a finale to the celebration of our country's 230th year of independence, we served the cool, patriotic-looking treats to our residents and staff.
