St. Luke Living Center: Residents make crafts for 4th

Once a month we have a scheduled craft day. Some are more "crafty" than others. We were without our faithful volunteer Tuesday afternoon when we decorated some large red party plates with white, blue, and gold stars. Later we arranged them to spell out a large USA on a wall on one of our busiest halls. We think it looks attractive and appropriate with Independence Day being right around the corner.

Ellen Darrow, her brother Jim Hett, and his wife Carol, were here Wednesday to share their music with us. We've enjoyed their visits for many years and are always happy when it's time for them to spend a portion of the evening with us.

Thursday afternoon Shyla Harris of Florence, a young piano student of Anita Hancock, accompanied her teacher to our home. Shyla played the piano and sang. She and Mrs. Hancock performed some piano duets and Anita also played her harpsichord for us. We've been fortunate to have Anita here on many occasions, but this was the first visit for Shyla, who just "graduated" from the second grade.

Our usual weekly baking activity, most often cookies, was Friday morning and this week we were hungry for peanut butter cookies. Our recipe called for peanut butter chips, but when we had none we substituted creamy peanut butter. Well, the results were delicious, although a much flatter cookie than we had anticipated. "Don't judge a book by its cover," goes for cookies as well.

The Rev. Don Mashburn of Strassburg Baptist Church, rural Marion, was our guest minister Sunday afternoon.

Resident Council, which is open to all residents of our facility, met Monday morning for the June meeting. This is a time to share thoughts, concerns, or suggestions with each other, or activity director, and other staff members. We also talked about the recent state and federal surveys, discussed our library of loaned large-print books, and the possibility of enlarging our collection of inspirational books.

Plans are being made to host a swimming party in our courtyard in July for children and grandchildren of staff and other guests. We also discussed our continuing desire to purchase a suitable vehicle to be used for resident outings and suggested possible sources of funding to make this hope a reality.

We concluded our meeting by reviewing some of the information contained in the Residents' Rights and plan to share and discuss this document at future meetings.
