Stinchcombs gather for family dinner in Salina

The Charles Stinchcomb family gathered Sunday in Salina for dinner and to visit. Family members present were Charlie and Barb Stinchcomb of Russell, Mike and Emma Stinchcomb of Solomon, Susie and Dick Mueller of Mentor, Charlene and Ralph Janzen of Hillsboro, and Rosalene and Charles.

Ken Nienstedt has been helping his mother since Christmas. She hasn't been feeling well and needs daily care.

Edmund Steiner, Vicki Smolik, and Faye and Jerry Makovec attended a farewell potluck dinner Friday evening honoring Leona Loney at the activity center.

Rita Kraus and Vicki Smolik helped Friday with the funeral dinner for Victor Shafers.

We just received word that Alvina Hoffman died this morning. She lived in this community with her husband for years and was a teacher in the Youngtown schools. She was my husband Kenneth's fifth grade teacher. She was a longtime member of Youngtown United Methodist Church. She will be missed by many of us.

Mr. and Mrs. Loren Cox of Newton called Sunday afternoon on Roseva McLinden.

Charles Kjellin is recuperating in the El Dorado hospital following surgery on his hip. He would appreciate cards and prayers, but still is too weak to receive visitors. Mary Beth Bowers is driving back and forth to spend her days with him.

The Roy Hetts received word Friday that his sister, Elma Piper, was in the Abilene hospital. Paul and Jane Hett of Parsons came by Saturday and picked up Roy and Rose Olive and took them to visit Elma. They aren't sure what is wrong with her, but they could visit her.

David and Shirley Bowers' Saturday evening visitors were Daniel and Kim Bowers, Bryce and Breanna of Stillwell and Rhonny Bowers. Eastmoor United Methodist Church women was attended Wednesday afternoon by Shirley Bowers, Samantha Hett, and Margaret Ireland. Samantha Hett went on the Met Tour this summer and helped give the program.

Cy and L.Dena Goertz spent Sunday afternoon with Shirley and David Bowers.

Shirley Bowers helped Thursday evening to prepare and serve the hospital auxiliary annual dinner at Eastmoor church. Howard and Beth Collett, Skip and Eileen Sieger, and Margaret Ireland enjoyed the supper.

Leon Hayen of Topeka visited Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with his mother, Dorothy Hayen, at St. Luke Living Center. John Hayen, Virginia Downing, Marilyn Geis, and Max and Donna Hayen were Dorothy's visitors during the week.

Weekend visitors at the Skip Sieger farm were longtime friends, John and Joan Mannhard from St. Louis, Mo.

Brendon and Tina Kraus were weekend houseguests of Don and Vickie Kraus. They were joined for meals and visits by Nick and Stephanie Kraus.

Sarah and Rachel Davidson and their team participated this past week in three quiz bowl meets and one debate competition. They took first place in one of the quiz bowl meets. Rose Davidson attended funeral services Wednesday for Calvin Riggs at Eastmoor church.

Vicki Smolik and Edmund Steiner were guests at the golden anniversary supper, reception, and dance honoring Mr. and Mrs. Joe Alvarez of Lost Springs. The celebration was held at the Herington Community Center.

Virginia Downing visited Dorothy Hayen at St. Luke Living Center Sunday afternoon and took her to visit Alvina Hoffman at St. Luke Hospital. Alvina enjoyed visiting with them. Dorothy's other visitors during the week were Marilyn Geis, Max and Donna Hayen, and John Hayen.

LuCretia Winkley, president of Youngtown FCE died Tuesday evening at the Hillsboro hospital. Roseva McLinden attended the rosary Friday evening at Zeiner Funeral Home. Roseva, Darlene Smith, and I attended the funeral services Saturday morning at Holy Family Parish, St. Patrick's Church, Florence. LuCretia will be missed. She has worked for years on both the council and local level of FCE. Many years she provided the ideas for a FCE banner for the county fair and we always took first place. We enjoyed going to her home in January for a soup luncheon and to make plans for the new year and fill out year books.

Jeannine Bateman was in Topeka Thursday at a legislative meeting for county treasurers. She had dinner with Kristine while in Topeka.

Raymond and Rita Kraus attended funeral services Monday for Rex Seibel at McPherson. Raymond was one of four honorary pallbearers. Raymond and Rita attended funeral services Saturday for Raymond Thone at St. Mark's Catholic Church.

Lorene Smith and I had lunch Thursday at Kingfisher's Inn to celebrate her birthday. I hosted the food bank Thursday morning.

Lesley Allen, who has been visiting her parents Skip and Eileen Sieger, caught a plane Thursday from Wichita to Chicago and was met there by her husband, Chris.

Betty Ireland and I had lunch Saturday in Florence.

Leonard and Rosalie Klassen had supper Tuesday night with Kelly Sorenson at McPherson. Last Sunday night Vernon and Rachel Friesen and Leonard and Rosalie had supper at Kingfisher's Inn. Leonard and Rosalie and Leonard and Merlie Friesen joined Richard and Wanda Harms from Newton Sunday for dinner at the home of Andy and Lillian Harms in Hesston.

Greg Bowers announced Sunday in church that Charles Kjellin had fallen and broken his hip. He is in the hospital at El Dorado. Mary Beth was with him there and he was to have surgery this Monday morning.

Youngtown FCE met Tuesday at McGillicuddy's for the first meeting of 2004. Roseva McLinden brought the meeting to order and we planned our new year's activities and filled out our year books. Due to the extreme cold, only Roseva, Darlene Schmidt, Gertie Mahoney, and Margaret Ireland were present. Most of our meetings this year will be on the first Tuesday of each month at McGillicuddy's.
