Strong Marion team defeats Lady Cougars
It's been a while since a Marion girls' basketball team defeated a Centre team. But that's what happened Jan. 29 when Marion played at Centre.
The Lady Cougars out-rebounded the Lady Warriors, 37 to 33, and outscored them in field goals, 40 percent to 34 percent. The two teams each had four blocked shots and 13 successful assists.
But Centre turned the ball over 27 times, compared to 17 turnovers by Marion. Centre's 24 fouls compared to 14 by Marion, plus Marion's 48 percent completion from the free-throw line combined to give the Lady Warriors the victory.
Centre outscored Marion in the first quarter, leading 13-10, but Marion surged ahead in the second quarter, outscoring Centre 16 to nine.
With a half-time lead of 26-22, the Lady Warriors gained on Centre, but not before a three-pointer by Alisha Loveless brought Centre within two, 29 — 27. Marion led, 46-35, at the end of the third quarter. Good free-throw shooting near the end of the game resulted in a 14-point win for Marion, with a final score, 61-47.
Marion's Katie Zogelman led her team in scoring, completing four three-point attempts and two field goals for 16 points. Stacia Williams and Brandi Peterie also scored in double digits.
Loveless was the only Centre player in double digits, scoring 17 points including two three-pointers, three two-pointers, and one free-throw. She also contributed 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
