Students clean and paint Big M on hill

Katie Zogelman and Whitney Wear, juniors at Marion High School, were among six people who worked fast, first with cleaning brooms, then with rollers, to repaint the huge letter "M" on a hillside less than a mile east of Warrior Stadium.

The work/fun event took place Thursday evening. Roger Schwab, MHS teacher and Key Club sponsor, also was among the workers. Others helping at the scene were Roger Hannaford III, Misti Richmond, a MHS sophomore, and Amber Richmond, a junior.

"We're going to do this every two years now," Schwab said. The letter, to promote school pride and spirit, was placed on the hill in the summer of 1997 as a memorial to Daniel Buckner. Cement, labor, and paint were donated by various contributors, who are recognized on a plaque inside the stadium.

After first cleaning the letter, 16 one-gallon buckets of white paint were required. The M is identical to the M on the Warriors' team football helmets, Hannaford said. All of the girls who took part Thursday are members of the MHS volleyball team and Key Club.
