Summer reading program survives move

With Marion City Library changing locations this summer, Librarian Janet Marler originally planned to cancel the summer reading program for one year.
She hadn't counted on her littlest readers.
"We had so many kids coming in who were too young to participate last year, and they were so disappointed," Marler said.
So, the reading program has returned, albeit two weeks shorter than usual.
It starts Monday and concludes Aug. 3.
This year's theme is "Join the Winner's Circle: Read!"
Children who completed kindergarten through eighth grade last year are eligible to participate.
Children receive a book bag with the first books they check out after signing up.
After reading 10 books, they receive a candy bar.
Those who read 20 or more books receive a coupon from Pizza Hut.
Summer Storytime for three- to five-year-olds is from 10 to 10:45 a.m. July 25 and Aug. 1.
In the end, Marler thinks it was good to continue the program. A chance to see the new library should draw in new families who haven't participated before, and it will help children get used to the new location. "We really didn't want them to wait a year, so it worked out for the best," she said.
