Superintedent search kicks into high gear

The search for a new superintendent in Marion-Florence USD 408 is about to kick into high gear.

During their regular meeting Monday night, board of education members set a special meeting date to learn the names of applicants selected by the superintendent search committee to be interviewed.

The search committee was chaired by Dr. John Hein, superintendent of schools for the Emporia district.

"We received 25 completed applications," business manager/board clerk Martin Tice told board members.

Tice said the search committee would be meeting Sunday to narrow down the field of applicants.

Next week, Hein will meet with the local school board to present the committee's recommendations which will include no more than five applicants. The board then will schedule interviews with the applicants.

The meeting with Hein was tentatively set for Jan. 21. Tice said it would be an executive session.

Current USD 408 superintendent Gerry Henderson will retire in June at the end of the current school year.

Candidates chosen to be interviewed will have a full day in Marion-Florence USD 408, according to the preliminary interview schedule.

Plans call not only for separate interviews with administrative staff, board members, certified staff and support staff, but also tours of district facilities, the special education office, a reception, and even special tours and events for candidate's spouses.

The interview process should begin in early February, Tice said.
