Support your team, whoever it is

You could say we became full-fledged K-State parents this weekend when we attended the KSU-Colorado football game. It was a beautiful day for football, and even nicer because K-State won.

I caused Daughter #1 some stress when I agreed to come to the game. I've been a KU fan for a long time and she was worried I might show up in a KU shirt. I compromised — I wore Colorado black.

You can mark it up to inexperience, but I was amazed at how elaborate some people are with their tailgating festivities. Our group did a simple hamburgers-on-the-grill thing. Nearby groups ran the gamut of takeout chicken to portable stoves and eggs Benedict.

K-State fans are nothing if not enthusiastic about football. About the only fans with more team spirit might be Marion Warrior fans.

If you weren't in the crowd Friday night when Marion defeated Wichita Independent to become the final Cottonwood Valley League champions, you missed an awesome performance.

It was a night of milestones.

There was a huge crowd on hand to see the Warriors win the CVL title. Fans stuck around for the post-game show which included an introduction of players and interviews with senior team members.

Senior running back Steven Boone was recognized for his 1,000-plus yards rushing for the season and received a standing ovation.

To top it all, Grant Thierolf and coaching staff Jerry Smith, Mark Meyer, and Doug Dick recorded the 100th victory in their 16-year career.

It was a great night and a great weekend. I've always been a proud Warrior fan. Now I guess I'll have to learn to be a K-State fan (except this weekend — I'll still be rooting for the Jayhawks).
