Susan Koslowsky is a Red Cross volunteer

Susan Koslowsky of Wichita has been a member of the board of Midway Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross at Wichita for six years.

Koslowsky is married to John Koslowsky, son of Harry and Theodora Koslowsky of Marion.

In her current role as chairman of the board, Koslowsky has taken an active role in assisting evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. She works on a volunteer basis.

She said she helped train several hundred volunteers to assist evacuees who were expected to come to Wichita. Arrangements had been made for temporary housing.

"We were ready for 1,800 people, but none came directly to us," she said. "We are thankful they could find places closer to home."

However, 500 had relatives or other connections in Wichita and came on their own.

Koslowsky said the Red Cross has been able to help them through vouchers for gas and other necessities.

"The generosity of people in the greater Wichita area and, from what I've heard, in Marion County, has been outstanding," she said.

She encourages people not to forget about local needs in the face of such a monumental disaster.

"Local giving is just as important," she said. "We never know when we or someone else in our community might need assistance."

Koslowsky serves on the boards of six Wichita area charities.
