Sylvin Holub
Sylvin Joseph Holub, 71, died May 5, 2003, at his home in Manhattan.
He was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Marion County, to Adolph and Lucy (Navrat) Holub.
Sylvin grew up in the Pilsen farm community and graduated from Lincolnville High School in 1950. He married Mildred Huna on Sept. 1, 1953, at Pilsen. The couple had three sons.
After many years of farming, Sylvin retired and he and Mildred moved to Manhattan where he became the manager of the Orschlen Farm Store. He worked there for a number of years, retiring from that job, then working part-time for McCoullough Property Management Company and retiring from there in 2000.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. John Nep. Catholic Church in Pilsen, and Catholic Workmen. He was a former member of the church board and CYO co-adviser with Mildred. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and baseball.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Dawn Holub of Leawood, Rod and Diane Holub of Manhattan, and John and Melissa Holub of Hays; a sister, Mildred Vajnar of Newton; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Fr. Paul Oborny led the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John Nep. Church in Pilsen.
The Mass of Resurrection was Friday morning at St. John Nep. Church, Holy Family Parish, Pilsen, with Fr. Paul Oborny as celebrant.
Marty Kroupa was lector. Jeff Bina sang "How Great Thou Art," with Charlene Svitak as organist.
Casket bearers were Gary, Rod, John, Dustin, Cody, and Zachary Holub. Honorary bearers were Ben and Grant Holub and Tony and Brian Johnson.
Burial was in Pilsen Cemetery. Military rites were presented by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established with the American Legion, Manhattan.
