Take a deep breath and start in
Did any of you read the article in the Wichita Eagle telling children's ideas about Thanksgiving? Things they were thankful for or how to cook a turkey? So cute. One little five-year-old boy said he was thankful for "bats because they eat bugs." A little five-year-old girl said she was thankful for "myself because I am pretty." Now there is an honest child.
Next comes Christmas. Do you have a list, things to do, gifts to buy, cards to mail, and places to go? Don't panic, just take a deep breath and start in.
In the past three years I have told most of my Christmas stories. I try not to repeat but I guess you wouldn't remember them, actually I have a hard time to do that, too.
Once at our Christmas program, Dutch Hauser was impersonating Santa and he promised my little boy a pony! Ornery. Dr. McCandless was Santa once and when he left the church two little boys started to follow him. He had to hide behind bushes and trees to get away from them.
The Hannaford sleigh bells were used to herald Santa's approach and his departure. Uncle Ed Hannaford for years had charge of preparing sacks of candy and nuts for the children.
In a church Christmas program Jack Beaston, Alex and Rosse Case were the three kings. All dressed in bathrobes and shawls over their heads. They made a brave effort to sing "We Three Kings" without giggling.
In country school, we spoke "pieces." I have never been more terrified, yet proud to be chosen to be in the program. We didn't have directors like Janet Killough and her assistants. What a production was the "Wizard of Oz!" What talent!
