Renelle Farrar of Canadian, Texas, director of the Canadian-Hemphill Chamber of Commerce, will speak Aug. 19 at the senior center. She will share the success story of economic development in her community, which has created 200 new jobs and transformed a near-ghost town into a bustling community of thriving businesses. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and rolls. The meeting will begin at 9:30. Lunch will be served at a cost of $5. The public is invited, but anyone wishing to attend must reply to Jim Clemmer at 785-965-2260 or Carole Spohn at 785-965-2639 by Thursday.

Prairie Pals invites the community to an ice cream social in the park at 7 p.m. Saturday. Bring your lawn chairs and socialize.

Leon Hajek died Saturday morning. Until moving into a rest home in Hillsboro recently, he had been a lifetime resident of this community. He will be greatly missed.

Relatives here have received word that Leo Bergkamp of Pretty Prairie died. He was the husband of the former Anna Marie Costello, who grew up here. She and her family have the sympathy of the Tampa community.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika attended church with Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna Sunday at Hope, where Lisa sang a solo. All enjoyed dinner out afterward.

Larry Hampton of Sierra Vista, Ariz., was a Sunday overnight guest of his mother, Lois Sklenar. Greg Sklenar of Wichita and Valerie Hampton of Hillsboro joined them Sunday, and all enjoyed a cookout in the evening.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina spent Sunday with his mother, Helen Schwartzman.

Adeline Bernhardt visited Milda Krauter at Marion Manor in Marion Sunday afternoon.

Those helping Paul Backhus celebrate his birthday with dinner at the cafe Sunday were Edna Backhus, Phyllis Mueller, Rodney Mueller, Tom and Bev Reid, Mike and Jennifer Jay, Brad Backhus, and Jason Backhus.

Mary Wiley of Centralia, Wash., Jim Wiley and Lance and Julie Mann, Carter and Taylor of Seattle, Wash., spent the weekend here visiting Helen Costello and other relatives. Tom and Pattie Ingalls, Jonathan Ingalls, and Laurie Sutherland, Mikie and Elizabeth joined them for dinner out in Abilene Friday evening. On Saturday all attended the Costello family reunion at Marion County Lake. In the evening all those previously named plus Mark and Monica Ingalls and Kevin Ingalls enjoyed supper out in Lost Springs. Mary is staying with Helen through this week.

Eleanor Murphy, Martha Melcher, and Sean Leihy were Sunday evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman.

Tampa youngsters made an excellent showing at the Marion County Fair this past week. Although your correspondent was unable to obtain a complete list of champion and reserve champion winners at this writing, she noticed a generous number of those huge purple and lavender ribbons adorning Tampa entries as she browsed the fair. Congratulations.

Family members who spent the weekend here visiting Martin and Catherine Hajek and John and Carla Hajek, Andrew, Amy, and Alex were Mary Ann and Walt Whitchurch, Chris and Jim of Penbrook Pines, Fla., Susan and Dennis Rowley, Nicole and Emily, Joan and Steve Hillyer, Kyle, Kelsey, and Katie of Overland Park, and Diane Challacomb, Brandon, Adam, and Eric of Manhattan.

Claudette Spohn, Adam and Lauren of Manhattan visited Gary and Carole Spohn on Saturday, and all attended the Marion County Fair.

Tillie Hein attended the funeral service for Emma Klenda at the Catholic church in Pilsen Saturday morning.

Tom and Lori Moldenhauer enjoyed dinner out Saturday in Salina.

Peggy Kleiber, Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas visited Leona Kleiber several times this week.

Georgia Spohn met Lenora Graham of Florence in Hillsboro Thursday for dinner out.

Willis and Eleanor Herbel visited Reuben and Lucille Kerbs Thursday evening.

Tillie Hein and Jim Srajer and Cole visited Leon Hajek Wednesday at a hospice in Wichita.

Among the numerous Tampa people who attended the Marion County Fair parade Wednesday were Adeline Bernhardt, Leona Kleiber, Gary and Carole Spohn, Georgia Spohn, and Jane Vajnar.

Houseguests of Alma and Dennis Meyer for all or part of the weekend of July 29-Aug. 2 were Tami Bolden, Alicia and Mya of Fremont, Neb., and Paul Brunner of Lincoln, Neb. Their parents, the Rev. Don and Marlene Brunner, and their friends, Marv and Sherri Groskruetz of Westfield, Wis., stayed at Jakey's Place Bed and Breakfast in Ramona, which had been Don's childhood home. Visitors during their stay included John Backhus of Enterprise, Weldon and Rosemary Deines of Herington, Ann Gorsage of Loveland, Colo., Tami Bolden, Alicia and Mya of Fremont, Neb., Paul Brunner of Lincoln, Neb., Marvin and Leona Deines, Junior Hanschu, Jessica Gilbert, and Tony Meyer of Ramona, Wilbert and Donna Backhus, B.J. and Tina Clement and Todd, Alan and Virginia Bentz and Tyler, Pastor Clark Davis, Bonnie Crandall, Dennis Meyer, and Alma Meyer of Tampa.

Geraldine Noonan of Dallas, Texas, and Helen Schwartzman were dinner guests July 25 of Wayne and Marita Schwartzman of Park City.

A large group gathered in the basement of St. John's Lutheran Church Aug. 1 for a dual purpose party. The event was in honor of the Rev. Don and Marlene Brunner, who were here from Westfield, Wis., visiting relatives, and in celebration of Alma Meyer's birthday. Others present included Mr. and Mrs. Emil Backhus, Mr. and Mr. Adolph Backhus, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Schultz, and Evan Backhus of Herington, John Backhus of Enterprise, Jackie Backhus and Emma and Mr. and Mrs. John Munson of Salina, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Backhus of Leavenworth, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Heine of Chase, Paul Brunner of Lincoln, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lorson of Hope; Herb Backhus, Wilbert and Donna Backhus, Cindy Bentz, Paul and Carl, Virginia Bentz, Cheri Bentz and Tyler, and Dennis Meyer.
