The second annual Santa Fe Trail Fest was a great success. The three winners in the dutch-oven cook-off were quite varied recipes. First place went to a cobbler prepared by Grant Srajer, Chad Mueller, Houston Svoboda, and Karl Riffel. Another group of boys consisting of Cole Srajer, Max Svoboda, Kyle Riffel, and Jared Barney made the second place stew. Carole Spohn's calico beans were awarded third place. Entries were judged by Tad Carlyle of Wabaunsee, Monica Leihy, and Mayor Jim Clemmer.

Two groups of musicians provided entertainment. Danielle, Allison, and Melody Routh of Augusta were the opening act. Melody played the fiddle, Danielle the mandolin, and Allison the mountain dulcimer and the banjo, and all three sang. Mike Weis of Salina, Gail Burns of Delavan, and Don Kneubuhl of Smolan played guitars and sang. Other activities included hay rack rides, old-fashioned games, a cake walk, and a wiener roast.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina spent Sunday with his mother, Helen Schwartzman. They attended church and enjoyed dinner out. Leroy Schwartzman of Ballwin, Mo., and Eleanor Murphy were afternoon and evening visitors. Additional afternoon callers were Duane and Lois Talley and Rocko, Dorothy Blackwood, Mary Thelen, and Bernice Goodwin, all of Salina. Stephanie Classen of Marion was an evening visitor.

Frank Patton was one of the Civilian Conservation Corps alumni honored Saturday afternoon at Marion County Lake. A statue of a CCC worker was unveiled, and a number of men shared some of their recollections of the Corps. Jane Vajnar also attended the dedication and got to see some old college friends, Lonnie and Liz Liljegren. Lonnie played the bagpipe in the dedication ceremony.

At Centre High School's homecoming game Friday evening two Tampa youth, Andrew Hajek and Shaina Makovec, were crowned king and queen. Congratulations.

Willis and Eleanor Herbel proudly welcomed their 16th grandchild, Elena Faye, born Sept. 28 to Jon and Ashlee Herbel. She weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 19 1/2 inches long. The maternal grandparents are Sam and Dena Bowman. (You may notice the name was derived by combining the two grandmothers' names.) Great-grandparents are Lester and Ruth Tajchman and Rosie Bowman.

Melody, Allison, and Danielle Routh of Augusta spent from Friday evening to Sunday with their grandmother, Leona Kleiber. Andrea Kleiber joined them Saturday for dinner.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika and their daughter, Lori Moldenhauer, took second place in the Oktoberfest parade Saturday morning at Lincolnville. Lori's car was decorated as a covered wagon to advertise Tampa's Santa Fe Trail Fest. The Stikas' grandson, James Weber, marched with the Centre band.

Mary Christiansen, Adeline Bernhardt, and Dee Duggan joined other Red Hat Ladies Saturday for a luncheon in Junction City. Their hosts were a chapter of Red Hat Ladies in that city.

Tillie Hein and Edna Mueller joined members of the Utech family for a potluck dinner Saturday at the parish hall in Ramona.

Enjoying dinner at the cafe Sunday were Dean and Becky Routh, Melody, Allison, and Danielle of Augusta, Terry and Cindy Vinduska of Marion, Lynn and Peggy Kleiber, Andrea and Nicholas, Adeline Bernhardt, and Leona Kleiber. The occasion was a celebration of Leona's Oct. 1 birthday. Some of the group came to Leona's home to visit before going to the Santa Fe Trail Fest. After the festival, the Routh girls accompanied their parents home.

Jim Clemmer and Tom and Dee Duggan attended a dinner Saturday in Herington celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Hope and Herington Lions Clubs.

Enid Albrecht of Wichita visited her sister, Georgia Spohn, Friday and took her to the cafe for dinner as a belated birthday celebration.

Amanda Kleiber and her friend Bethany of Manhattan visited Leona Kleiber Friday evening to wish her a happy birthday.

Kaylee Hall of Herington was an overnight guest Friday of her grandparents, Tom and Dee Duggan.

Lois Sklenar met Lucy Young of Wichita and Tony Young of Goessel at Marion Reservoir Thursday for a picnic and fishing.

Georgia Spohn met Melvin Mohn of Lyons in Lindsborg Thursday for dinner out.

Tom and Dee Duggan went to Herington Thursday evening to see Kaylee Hall's soccer game.

Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber went to Marion Manor Friday afternoon and met Becky Routh, Allison, Melody, and Danielle of Augusta. They visited Milda Krauter to help celebrate her birthday. They served cake and drinks to all the residents. Also celebrating birthdays were Leona and two of the residents, Alice Biehler and Charlie Green. The Routh girls entertained those present with a very enjoyable program using the banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and dulcimer.

Tillie Hein distributed surplus commodities Thursday afternoon at the senior center.

Georgia Spohn met Earl and Ruth Pankratz of Newton and Lenora Graham of Florence Wednesday at Durham for dinner out.

Nicholas Kleiber was a supper guest Sept. 29 of his grandmother, Leona Kleiber.

Tom and Dee Duggan met Everett and Rhea Kolling of Herington, Joe and Joyce Cox of Abilene, and Joyce's sister Pat of Kansas City at the Great Plains Theater Sept. 28 at Abilene. They saw a production of "The Nerd."

Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber visited Milda Krauter Wednesday afternoon at Marion Manor.

Nicholas Kleiber was a supper guest Wednesday evening of his grandmother, Leona Kleiber.

Georgia Spohn and Jane Vajnar attended Learning in Retirement Sept. 27 at Tabor College in Hillsboro. The speaker was Helen Beckham of Marion County Lake. She talked about the history of the lake and promoted the dedication of the CCC statue on Saturday.

Melissa Stuchlik and Tanner of Wichita were dinner guests Sept. 27 of her grandmother, Leona Kleiber.

Centre High School freshmen attending a Future Farmers of America Greenhand Conference at Arkansas City did their school proud. Among 290 students in the district competing on a written test, Julie Rziha and Nellie Hill tied for first place with perfect scores, Kristine Jirak placed fourth, and Allie Will placed sixth.

Evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman on Sept. 26 were Stephanie Classen of Marion, Eleanor Murphy, and Martha Melcher.
