Tampa City Council: Plans for post office submitted

Contributing writer

At the monthly meeting Jan. 9, the Tampa City Council discussed making a change in the firm that draws up the annual budget. Mayor Jim Clemmer reported he had received a letter from Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd soliciting renewal of the city's contract with them to do the budget for a fee of $500 per year, a $50 per year raise from the previous contract.

Clemmer said he had approached the firm of Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball, who perform this job for some other towns in the area. Their fee would be $375 per year. There was some discussion weighing the advantage of saving money against the possible disadvantage of changing to a firm with which they have no experience. However, Clemmer had talked with another mayor, who had been quite satisfied with their work.

Willis Herbel moved to give the old firm a chance to match the $375 fee and to change firms if they are not willing to do so. On a second from Paul Backhus, the motion carried.

The mayor showed the council plans for a post office building drawn up by the architect, William Morris. He will submit the plans to the postal service, along with letters from several citizens requesting the reopening of the Tampa Post Office.

Clemmer also informed the council there would be a special meeting Jan. 16. Rose Mary Saunders would be present to discuss the proposed grant for sewer improvements.

When repairs were required for the furnace recently, it had been suggested that it might be advisable to have a maintenance contract with KVK, the company that did repairs. Clemmer reported such a contract is available for $195 per year. This would cover checking the furnace and air conditioner in the spring and fall and routine maintenance such as changing filters. If further repairs are needed, there would be a 10 percent discount on parts and labor. If an emergency made a weekend service call necessary, no overtime would be added to the labor charge.

"I think it's a good idea," said Tom Moldenhauer, and he moved to get the maintenance contract. Tim Svoboda seconded the motion, and it carried.

Clemmer asked if it would be all right to let Gary Spohn have the stone left over from the school demolition, and the council agreed to it. He also suggested having shelves put in the storage room at the city office at the same time insulation is installed, and the council gave its approval.

Bills approved for payment included $543.50 for repairs to the furnace, $99.43 for Saturock, $167.87 for dues to the Kansas League of Municipalities, $525.50 to William Morris for the post office plans, and $73 for insulation to be used in the storage room.
