Tampa: Duggans enjoy river cruise in Europe

On last week's news gathering day, your correspondent was occupied with a boring medical procedure, so that news carried over to be added to this week's items.

Tom and Dee Duggan returned Tuesday evening from a two and one-half-week river cruise on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers in Europe. They met Betty and Don Frick of Topeka, Pat and Gene Westerhaus of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Carolyn Duggan and Barbara Wilson of Hutchinson in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and joined them for the cruise. Their route took them through five countries — the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. Some sights they particularly enjoyed were the canals in Amsterdam, the cathedral at Cologne, Germany, the athletic field at Nuremburg, Germany, where Hitler held his huge rallies, and a Franciscan abbey at Melk, Austria. They ended the cruise at Budapest, Hungary, and flew home from there.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs attended the Centre-Marion junior high basketball game Monday evening at Marion. Their grandson, Rustyn Kerbs, was playing.

Georgia Spohn met Lenora Graham of Florence Monday morning in Hillsboro. They attended the Learning in Retirement program at Tabor College and enjoyed lunch out. Helen Lapp of Souderton, Pa., presented a program about Service Opportunities for Older Persons, or SOOP.

Tillie Hein gave out commodities Tuesday afternoon at the senior center.

Ashton Smith of Salina visited Monday afternoon with her grandparents, Reuben and Lucille Kerbs.

Gary and Carole Spohn spent the weekend with their son, Steve Spohn, at Fayetteville, Ark. They toured Fort Smith and Van Buren on Saturday and Eureka Springs on Sunday. En route home Monday they stopped at Miami, Okla., to eat at Waylan's Ku-Ku Burger Cafe on historic Route 66 and visit with the proprietor, Gene Waylan, and his family. Gene is a cousin to Carole.

Greg Sklenar of Wichita spent the weekend with his mother, Lois Sklenar. Valerie Hampton of Hillsboro was an additional Sunday dinner guest.

Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber accompanied other members of the Red Hat Society to Wichita Friday evening for supper out and a performance of the grand opera at Century II.

Lucille Kerbs met Connie Thompson in Abilene Saturday, and they enjoyed dinner out.

Leona Kleiber visited Melissa Stuchlik, Tanner and Alli on Thursday.

Sunflower Senior Citizens enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner Nov. 8, at the senior center. The hostesses, Leona Kleiber and Adeline Bernhardt, decorated with a Thanksgiving theme. Others present were Shirley Krause, Jim and Mary Clemmer, Margaret Jirak, Magdalen Dvorak, Martha Melcher, Tillie Hein, Carole Spohn, Frank Patton, Helen Costello, Bonnie Crandall, Ruby Vinduska, and Jane Vajnar. After dinner and the business meeting, the group played card bingo.

Leona Kleiber spent Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 with Dean and Becky Routh, Melody, Allison, and Danielle of Augusta. They all attended Hallelujah night Oct. 31at the Assembly of God Church in Andover. The Routh girls joined the other children present in wearing costumes which portrayed Bible heroes. Games and refreshments were enjoyed. The Rouths and Leona attended the Butler County 4-H Achievement Banquet Nov. 5 where all three girls received clover pins. Danielle was awarded four junior achievement awards for her record books. Melody earned blue awards for her record books in visual and performing arts and public speaking. Allison won a blue award for her reading record book and was the county champion in geology. The Routh family also received an award for being a host family for a Japanese exchange student for three weeks this past summer. The Rouths and Leona visited Nov. 6 at the Andover care home. A devotion was offered, and the Routh girls provided instrumental music for the residents.

The Lutheran Women's Missionary League met Nov. 2 in the church basement. Joyce Medley gave the opening and closing devotions, and Pastor Clark Davis led the topic. New officers elected for 2006 were Cindy Bentz and Kathy Davis, co-chairmen; Leona Kleiber, secretary; Adeline Bernhardt, treasurer; and Joyce Medley, Christian growth chairman. Janet Bielefeld was hostess.

Supper guests of Frank and Anna Mae Stika Nov. 6, were Kodi Kelsey of Marion, Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna, and Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki.

Lucille Kerbs went to Abilene Nov. 4 and accompanied Connie Thompson and Taylor to Manhattan where they visited Allison Phillips, who is a student at Kansas State University. Allison showed them around the campus and the city, and all enjoyed dinner out.

Adeline Bernhardt spent Nov. 4-7 with Carl, Kathy, and Clint Hubbard of Wellington. Additional guests for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner Sunday were Barney, Linda, and Megan Bernhardt and Chris, Dee Anna, and Gabrielle Stout of Wichita, Mitch and Jennifer Rusk, Kelsey and Chandler of Edmond, Okla., Donna Hubbard and Andrea King of Wellington. The occasion also was a celebration of Kathy's birthday, which is Nov. 26, and Barney's birthday, Nov. 28. On Saturday Kathy and Adeline attended the women's fair in Wellington. Leona Kleiber, who had been spending some time with her daughter and family at Augusta, accompanied Adeline home Monday.

Lucille Kerbs took Jane Vajnar out Nov. 3 for breakfast in Durham.
