Tampa: EMTs honored at banquet

The first class of emergency medical technicians at Tampa were among those honored at a banquet Saturday evening at the American Legion hall in Hillsboro. Tampa restaurateurs, Marvin and Maggie Meisinger, catered the meal. Plaques were awarded to Lois Sklenar, Phyllis Mueller, Eleanor Murphy, Evelyn Hensley, and Don and Ramona Beisel. George and Pauline Kristek of Salina, who also were part of that EMT class, were unable to attend.
Paul and Edna Backhus went to Lyons Sunday afternoon for the 70th birthday celebration of Don Klein at the fellowship hall of the Methodist church.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Wichita Sunday afternoon to watch the baseball game between the Wichita State Shockers and California State-Fullerton. Eloise Kerbs of Dodge City also was there to cheer on Reuben Kerbs. Reuben and Lucille had supper in Wichita on the way home.
Sunday dinner guests of Frank and Anna Mae Stika were Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna, Danny Denham, and Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki.
Ruby and Lou Vinduska were hosts Sunday for a family dinner at their home in Pilsen in celebration of Lou's birthday, which is March 13. Guests included Ron and Tammi Vinduska and Kristi of Topeka, Daniel and Melissa Stuchlik of Wichita, and Leona Kleiber. A decorated birthday cake, ice cream, pie, and drinks were served in the afternoon.
Irma Benda, Martha Melcher, and Eleanor Murphy were Sunday evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman.
Gary and Carole Spohn brought a restaurant dinner to the home of Georgia Spohn Sunday and they enjoyed the meal together.
Tillie Hein accompanied Pamela and Bill Fillmore of Cottonwood Falls to Omaha, Neb., Friday morning. Along with Craig and Teresa Srajer of Moline, Ill., and Debra and Terry Dody of Branson, Mo., they were weekend guests of Don and Carolyn Srajer. All attended the wedding of John Bauer and Michele Belford on Saturday.
Nikki Stenzel and Ashley Bringhurst attended a regional Girl Scout overnight outing at Emporia Saturday night. The girls enjoyed a movie, shopping, and camping out in the mall.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs and Julie Kerbs and Ashton attended a party for Taylor Thompson's sixth birthday on Saturday at the Pizza Hut in Abilene. Taylor's parents, Doug and Connie Thompson, were hosts. Other guests included Allison Phillips and a friend, Barbara Stensaas and Lynda Lowry of Abilene, Tim and Marchelle Kerbs, April and Molly of Salina, Jesse Smith of Lincolnville, and Roger Thompson and Jamen of Junction City. Taylor opened her gifts, and all had pizza followed by birthday cake. Her birthday was March 5.
Diane Herron and Andrew of Wichita were weekend guests of Jerry and Jeanne Rziha, Cecilia and Julie.
Greg and Angela Wilczek, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Hannah of Minneola visited Reuben and Lucille Kerbs Saturday morning.
Amanda and Andrea Kleiber and Cecilia Rziha competed in a forensics meet in Herington Saturday.
Barney Bernhardt of Wichita was a Saturday dinner guest of his mother, Adeline Bernhardt.
Frank and Anna Mae Stika and Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu attended the final basketball game of the season Saturday morning at Junction City. James Weber was one of the players.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Wichita Friday to watch the Shocker baseball team play California State-Fullerton. The game was a real cliff-hanger, which ran 15 innings. Glenn and Eloise Kerbs and Clayton of Dodge City also were there. Reuben Kerbs was on the Shocker team. Reuben and Lucille Kerbs enjoyed supper in Newton on the way home.
Members of the Saint John's Lutheran Women's Missionary League and their guests met in the church basement for a salad supper followed by a World Day of Prayer service. The prayer service was led by Pastor Clark Davis. Guests were Lucille Kerbs, Frieda Bentz, Lola Teetzen, Kathy Rehmert, Becky Davis, Rachel Davis, Orvell Brunner, Gertie Schubert, Jean Brunner, Yvonne Brunner, and Mrs. Neuschafer. Members present were Edna Backhus, Cindy Bentz, Adeline Bernhardt, Kathy Davis, Evelyn Hensley, Leona Kleiber, Joyce Medley, Alma Meyer, Betty Mueller, Edna Mueller, and Phyllis Mueller.
Jane Vajnar attended the Learning in Retirement program at Tabor College in Hillsboro Thursday morning. The speaker was Dr. Michael Crawford of the University of Kansas who talked about his study of biological aging among Mennonites in the Goessel, Inman, and Henderson, Neb., communities. Because that was her last afternoon of substituting for Mark Roberts at the high school in Marion, Jane was unable to take advantage of lunch in the cafeteria. Mark was able to return to full time work Monday. His recovery is progressing well.
