Tampa: Fourteen compete in contest at CHS

Three area councils of Knights of Columbus (Herington, Tampa, and Pilsen) sponsored a free throw contest Sunday afternoon for boys and girls, ages 10 to 14, at Centre High School. No girls entered the competition, but 14 boys competed. Winners will advance to district competition at Junction City in February with the potential to compete clear to the international level. Nicholas Kleiber and Jacob Jirak tied in the 10-year-old division with Nicholas winning the shoot-out. Winners in the other age brackets were Matthew Lorson, Hope, 11; Isaac Leihy, 12; Sean Leihy, 13; and Seth Jirak, 14.

Dana Depo and Amanda Kleiber attended Contec Sunday, a reunion at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita of young people who had experienced the Teens Encounter Christ retreat in the fall.

Linda Bernhardt of Wichita was a Sunday dinner and afternoon guest of Adeline Bernhardt.

Sunday evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman were Eleanor Murphy, Martha Melcher, and Jim and Mary Clemmer. William Benda of Pilsen visited Helen Friday evening.

Sunday dinner guests of Frank and Anna Mae Stika were Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki and Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna.

Mary Reich of Hope and Georgia Spohn enjoyed Sunday dinner in Woodbine.

A number of Tampa young people were on the Centre quiz teams which competed Saturday at meets in Hillsboro and Council Grove. The team at Hillsboro consisted of Cecilia Rziha, Amanda Kleiber, Kristin Mueller, Rachel Davis, and Jenna Beneke. They made it into the semifinals where they were narrowly defeated. The team going to Council Grove was Andrea Kleiber, Alisa Fernandes, Laura Klenda, Katie Carlson, and Danielle Engler.

Don and Betty Frick of Topeka and Tom and Dee Duggan enjoyed lunch at the café on Thursday.

Mildred Hamm, Eleanor Herbel, and Jane Vajnar attended the monthly meeting of King's Daughters Thursday evening at the Durham Baptist church. Ruth Hamm and Dorene Joy were hostesses. Ruth also led the lesson on the example set by Christ. Having forgotten she was supposed to present a mission study, Jane gave an impromptu report on the mission activities of the children in Wednesday evening's, "Kid's Time."

Tampa Lions Club met for dinner Thursday at the café.

Knights of Columbus held their annual dinner Wednesday evening at the café with about 25 members present.

St. John's Lutheran Women's Missionary League met Wednesday evening at the church. Pastor Davis led the topic and devotions. New president Kathy Davis presided at the business meeting. Leona Kleiber was hostess. Others present were Betty Mueller, Joyce Medley, Janet Bielefeld, Evelyn Hensley, Adeline Bernhardt, and Edna Backhus.

Georgia Spohn met her cousin Lenora Graham and friend Meg for dinner Jan. 8 at Hillsboro.

A group for St. John's Lutheran Church gave a birthday party Friday afternoon at the HCMC long-term care facility. Pastor Clark Davis gave an inspirational message and everyone sang "Happy Birthday." Others in the group were Kathy Davis, Adeline Bernhardt, Evelyn Hensley, Joyce Medley, Edna Mueller, and Leona Kleiber. Five residents with January birthdays were given angel figurines and birthday cards. Cake and juice were enjoyed by all.
