Tampa: Guests join Gene Costello for family reunion

Weekend guests of Gene Costello were Tim and Jane Dodds, Kristen and Matthew of Lenexa, Dan Costello of Alexandria, Va., and Jim and Sydney Costello, Bridget, Rebecca, Philip, and Anna of Colwich. All joined other relatives Sunday for a family reunion at Marion County Lake.

Tampa young people excelled at the county fair last week (see list of winners in this week's issue).

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs attended the championship game of the National Baseball Congress tournament in Wichita Sunday evening.

Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber visited Milda Krauter Sunday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital.

Many Tampa people attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Alex and Jean Stuchlik at Pilsen Sunday afternoon. The occasion included a Polka Mass at noon, followed by a reception and dance.

Paul and Edna Backhus attended an 80th birthday party for Edward McGinness on Sunday at McGillicuddy's Restaurant in Marion.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina spent Sunday with Helen Schwartzman. In the afternoon, all attended the Stuchliks' anniversary celebration. Additional evening visitors were Eleanor Murphy, Martha Melcher, and Jim and Mary Clemmer.

Paul and Edna Backhus were among those attending the Stuchliks' anniversary celebration.

Weekend guests of Martin and Catherine Hajek were Walt and Mary Ann Whitchurch, Joe, Jim, and Chris of Wichita, Dennis and Susan Rowley, Nicole, Sarah, Emily, and Christopher of Chesapeake, Va., Steve and Joan Hillyer, Kyle, Kelsey, and Katherine of Overland Park, and Steve and Diane Challacomb, Brandon and Adam of Manhattan. All attended the family reunion at Marion County Lake. John and Carla Hajek, Andrew, Amy, and Alex also went to the reunion.

Lucille Kerbs visited Connie Thompson, Allison and Taylor Saturday afternoon.

Lynn and Peggy Kleiber, Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas were frequent visitors last week of Leona Kleiber.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs were among those attending the men's softball tournament at Florence Friday and Saturday.

Paul and Edna Backhus attended a dinner reception and dance Saturday in celebration at the Moose Lodge in Wichita of Eugene and Anna Marie Miller's golden wedding anniversary.

A number of people from this community attended the funeral service for Ona Donahue Saturday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion. She was a longtime resident of Durham before moving into the nursing home in Hillsboro a few years ago. Her family has the sympathy of the Tampa community.

Phyllis Mueller and Paul and Edna Backhus attended the 4-H picnic and livestock sale Friday evening at the Marion County Fair in Hillsboro.

Eleanor Herbel, Autumn Chisholm, and Jane Vajnar were among those who attended a meeting of King's Daughters Thursday evening at the home of Donna Diener in Hillsboro. Carol Ollenburger was an assisting hostess. Dorene Joy presented a mission study and Muriel Christiansen led a lesson on peer evangelism.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Wichita Thursday evening for the National Baseball Congress world series tournament at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Their grandson Reuben Kerbs pitched for the Anchorage, Alaska, Pilots team against the Wichita Braves. Also in his cheering section were Glenn and Eloise Kerbs of Dodge city, Tim and Marchelle Kerbs of Salina, and many friends.

Paul and Edna Backhus and Phyllis Mueller went to the Marion County Fair parade in Hillsboro the evening of the 7th. After the parade they met Bev and Tom Reid of Marion, Mike and Jennifer Jay and some friends of Hillsboro, Kathy and Jason Backhus, and Sara Houdyshell for supper in celebration of Paul's birthday.

Loren Toevs of Peoria, Ill., stopped to visit his aunt Evelyn Hensley the afternoon of Aug. 7. On Thursday morning he went to Halstead to attend his high school reunion. Loren and Evelyn enjoyed dinner at Kingfisher's Inn near Marion Sunday noon along with their relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Richmond and Mary Bezdek of Marion, Margaret Bezdek of Florence, and Roy and Virginia Pientka of Hesston. Loren left for home Monday morning.

Visitors of Leona Kleiber the afternoon of Aug. 6 were Neva Heidebrecht of Lincoln, Neb., and Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas Kleiber.

A number of people from this area attended the funeral of Clarence Lohrenz Aug. 6 at the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. He had spent most of his life in the Durham area before moving to Hillsboro upon retirement. His family has the sympathy of the Tampa community.

A number of Tampa people attended a melon feed in the park at Durham Aug. 6 in honor of the Rev. Richard and Mayetta Curtis, Nathaniel, Rebekah, and Phillip of Milbank, S.D. Pastor Curtis was pastor of the Baptist church in Durham a few years ago.

Leona Kleiber and Peggy Kleiber, Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas attended the 4-H goat judging at the county fair. Andrea participated in the event and all enjoyed lunch together afterward.

Chuck and Janet Klatt of Fillmore, Calif., Charles and Carole Finan of Salina, and Arlie and Eileen Janzen of Abilene joined Martha Melcher and Eleanor Murphy for dinner at the café Aug. 6. They also called on Amelia Vinduska in Pilsen and Melissa Brunner and did some sightseeing in Tampa and Pilsen, including the refurbished church and the memorial to Father Emil Kapun.

Aug. 4 afternoon and evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman were John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina, Joel, Jennifer, and Molly Schwartzman of Portland, Ore., John Matthew Schwartzman and Amy Medera of Eugene, Ore., Wayne Schwartzman of Wichita, and Leroy and Justin Schwartzman of Ballwin, Mo. Joining them in the evening were Martha Melcher and Eleanor Murphy.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs attended Art Woten's 99th birthday party Aug. 5 at Boelling's pharmacy in Herington. Many friends were present to help him celebrate with cake and coffee.

Julie Utt of Winfield, Rita Hensley of Shawnee, and Pam and Lawrence Moreno of Austin, Texas, arrived in Tampa Aug. 1 to visit their mother, Evelyn Hensley. They visited Edna Vajnar Thursday afternoon at the nursing home in Hillsboro. Tiffany Luna from Lowell, Mass., was visiting friends in Hillsboro and joined them at the nursing home. Evelyn and her guests enjoyed dinner in Abilene Friday evening and went on to Salina for the Schwartzman family reunion. The Morenos and Evelyn returned to Tampa Sunday afternoon. They enjoyed lunch on Monday at the café before going to Kansas City where they spent the night with Rita and Charles Quinn. They flew home to Austin Tuesday morning.

Ashley Schwartzman of Ballwin, Mo., and Matt Gross of Chesterfield, Mo., visited Helen Schwartzman Aug. 2.
