Tampa mushrooms into tent city

A small tent city mushroomed in the northeast corner of Tampa over the weekend when the town was host to the Marion County men's slow pitch softball tournament. The Tampa men took first place with the McDonald's team, which also plays their home games on the Tampa field, coming in second. The Tampa men lost only one game, and that was Saturday evening to the McDonald's team. To emerge as champions they had to win five straight games between 2 and 9 p.m. Sunday.
Members of the Leo Jirak family gathered at Kelly Park in Burlington Sunday for their 27th annual family reunion. Leonard and Linda Jirak of Hartford as hosts. The party was a luau with everyone sporting island dress with leis. Entertainment included dancing the limbo (Travis Brunner and Albert Jirak were the last ones eliminated.) and a variety of games. Those attending included Bob and Flo Rahn, Hillsboro; Curt and Ella Vajnar, Conrad and Colton, Hays; Amy Vajnar and Lis, Emporia; Stephanie Jirak and Erin Collins, Olathe; Ann and Tom Collins, Williamsburg; Mike and Glenda Jirak, Glade; Luke and Iris Jirak, Maize; Steve and Vickie Jirak, Raschelle, Seth, and Jacob, Ramona; Mark and Theresa Jirak, Zachary, Kalynn, Anna, and Andrew, Atchison; Greg and Jackie Jirak, Ethan, Heidi, Emma, Leo, and Pius, Oakley; Maria Jirak, James and Sandy Jirak, Monica, Dominic, and Isaac, and Albert and Theresa Jirak, Goddard, Lee and Jennifer Briengarde, Olivia and Sam of Indianapolis, Ind.; Travis and Laura Brunner, Kearney, Neb.; Aminda Brunner, Hays; Francis and Mary Jirak and Kristine, Ron Jirak, Margaret Jirak, and Jesse and Rita Brunner and Nathan.
Stephanie Classen of Marion and Eleanor Murphy were Sunday evening visitors of Helen Schwartzman.
Marcel and Irma Benda were Sunday evening visitors of Frank and Anna Mae Stika.
Adeline Bernhardt and Leona Kleiber visited Milda Krauter Sunday afternoon at Marion Manor in Marion.
Members of the Tampa Triple T's 4-H Club made an excellent showing at the Marion County Fair last week. Although all results were not available at this writing, many Tampa young people earned champion or reserve champion, to say nothing of many purple and blue ribbons.
Darlene and Paul Robb of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Doris Morgan of Monett, Mo., arrived here Friday to spend some time with their mother, Martha Melcher.
Dale and Sandy Clemmer of Salina visited his parents, Jim and Mary Clemmer, and Ron Clemmer on Sunday.
Mildred Bernhardt of Lyons, Warren and Paula Fike of Ramona, and Paul and Edna Backhus were among many relatives and friends who attended the funeral of Wilma Nunn Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pratt. Mrs. Nunn was a native of this area, and her family has the sympathy of the Tampa community.
Ron and Jody Heath, Danielle and Tyler of Salina were weekend guests of her mother, Phyllis Mueller.
Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki and Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna spent Sunday with Frank and Anna Mae Stika.
Mary Margaret Wiley of Centralia, Wash., returned home Friday after spending a week here to attend a Marymount reunion in Salina and to visit her sister-in-law Helen Costello and other relatives.
Carl and Kathy Hubbard of Wellington were Saturday supper guests of her mother, Adeline Bernhardt.
Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki attended the fair in Salina on Saturday.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs and Rustyn Kerbs toured the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene Friday and enjoyed dinner out.
Adeline Bernhardt, Leona Kleiber, and Ruby Vinduska attended the 4-H style review Thursday evening in the pavilion at Hillsboro. Leona's grandchildren, Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas Kleiber, were participants.
Paul Backhus' siblings and their spouses took him to supper in Yoder Friday evening in celebration of his birthday. Others present were Edna Backhus, Paul and Emma Paulson of Mount Ida, Ark., Gerald and Alice Yoakum of Wichita, Keith and Lydia Evans of Haysville, Mildred Bernhardt of Lyons, Vic Backhus of Herington, and his friend, Melvina Boselman of Salina.
Georgia Spohn attended the burial service for her aunt, Marjorie Pankratz, Thursday afternoon at Marion.
At a meeting of the Tampa Lions Club Aug. 5, JayAnn Schneider of Herington, district president, presented the club with a $200 check in recognition of having the largest increase in membership in the district. Also, four new members were inducted that evening: Pastor Clark and Kathy Davis, Gary Schneider, and Dee Duggan.
Taylor Thompson of Abilene and Rustyn Kerbs spent the afternoon of Aug. 4 with their grandparents, Reuben and Lucille Kerbs.
Georgia Spohn spent July 30 to Aug. 3 with Norma and Orlin Wagner of Wichita while Ryan and Claudette Spohn of Manhattan and Gary and Carole Spohn went to Iowa City, Iowa, where Ryan received his doctorate from the University of Iowa.
