The time is overdue

Wags who sit around and complain are the ones who won't do much to fix what they are complaining about. They sit on their haunches like cut dogs, barking and whining but take no action. "The time has come," our friends say. The time has come to do something for "this town" or "this county." In fact, it's long overdue.

Many of those good folks would welcome the opportunity to become involved. They'd be willing workers, community volunteers, if given the opportunity.

With Old Settlers' Day coming up and Art in the Park on us this week, there are many opportunities to get folks off their duff and in the rough.

Give 'em a job to do and they'll respond with sleeves rolled up.

From the perspective of many decades as an observer from the vantage point of your county seat newspaper, this agent has a suggestion:

When you hear anyone — man, woman, or child — complaining about "they" and what should be done, make a call to the person in charge (mayor, club president, whatever) and suggest that complainer immediately be appointed to the committee.

They'd be called, asked to volunteer, and go to work. The job would get done, they'd enjoy doing it, and become a booster instead of a growler.

Or, more likely, folks would quit complaining because they'd be afraid of being "volunteered" to serve on a committee.
