Just as Friday nights win over Wichita Independent etched another Cottonwood Valley League title into school history, the Marion coaching staff also reached a monumental milestone.
The coaching staff, which has been together for 16 seasons recorded their 100th win Friday night.
Perhaps more astonishing than the 100 wins in less than 16 seasons, is that the coaching staff has remained together since head coach Grant Thierolf took over back in the late 80s early 90s.
Thierolf, who was unavailable for comment, helped construct the four-horsemen who have been coaching football hopefuls over past 16 years.
Tod Gordon, Marion Athletic Director noted the significance of the victories among the four coaches.
"It's a major milestone," Gordon said. "What are the chances four coaches are going to all record 100 wins and all of (the victories) have been (at Marion). There's a lot of people who will never get to 100."
Assistant coach and defensive coordinator Jerry Smith said the experience of winning 100 games echoes the school's quality student-athletes and the overall dedication to the football team.
"It takes a lot of really good kids and a lot of good coaches, but you can't (win) them without the kids," Smith said. "You can't do it without the fans. It feels great."
Assistant coach Doug Dick said winning 100 games with his fellow coaches was special.
"It was pretty awesome," Dick said. "We've shared the good and the bad. You go through a lot of wars together."
Mark Meyer, Marion offensive and defensive line coach said the experience of winning a decades worth of games has been amazing.
"It hardly seems possible that we have won that many," Meyer said "When you are having fun, time just flies by. We have been very blessed having good kids to work with, a supportive administration throughout the entire time, and a great community to coach for."
"Great kids, good support from administration, parents and community are key ingredients for success. Obviously, Grant has been a huge key for us as well. His leadership, enthusiasm, knowledge, and love for the game as well as his love for kids has made a big difference. I don't think our teams could have been as successful as we have been without him. He brings that certain charisma and drive that is needed to be successful."
Meyer said that the discipline among the coaching staff is a big reason they've experienced so much success over the years.
"It is essential to have good chemistry among the four of us," Meyer said. "I know I would not have stayed with coaching as long as I have if I did not enjoy both the kids and the coaching staff. It takes more time out of a person's life than you can imagine. I would not give up that time from my family if I did not love what I am doing."
Friday night, the Warrior staff begins their quest for 200, as Marion travels to Bluestem.
