Third-graders participate in Ag Awareness Day at MHS
About 100 third-graders from Hillsboro and Marion attended the annual Ag Awareness Day Friday morning at the Marion High School athletic field.
Mark Meyer, agriculture education teacher at the high school, said it went well. "All but one rotation (stop on the tour) made 15 presentations" to the kids, he said.
"The Marion kids got to 14 of the 15," he added.
Meyer said his FFA/ag-ed students did a nice job conducting the event and the stops, or rotations. Sponsors said so, he added.
The pony rides and the petting zoo were among the clear favorites, but the 4-wheelers, ATV and safety presentations also were popular, Meyer said.
Lori Tajchman brought some animals for the petting zoo, and George Oborny brought some baby pigs.
"We hope to get Herington and a Wichita school or two included in this next year," Meyer said.
He thanked those who helped with the day, including Deer Trail Implement, Inc. and Straub International, both of Marion, for furnishing equipment; Co-op Grain and Supply, which presented a unit on ag chemicals (fertilizer); and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, which made a presentation about soil erosion.
It was a somewhat rainy and cool day, but "the sun came out about 11 (a.m.)," Meyer said.
