Third graders show support for U.S. troops
Students appear on Wichita TV
My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light. Protect us by thy might, Great God, our King!
Wafted along by a strong, north wind, the words floated across the green grass of Central Park. Third grade students from Marion Elementary School were celebrating the placing of yellow ribbons Friday afternoon throughout the downtown area in honor of the men and women of the Armed Forces.
The students were in Florence earlier to do the same thing.
When asked how they felt about what they had done, they used words like "good," "great," and "fantastic."
"The yellow ribbons mean we want all the soldiers to come back home safely," said Beth Nesser. "They are doing it so we can make sure the Iraq people have freedom, too. Not just us."
Many of the children expressed similar sentiments.
Kevin Cochran of KWCH, Channel 12, and Craig Lee of KAKE, Channel 10, Wichita, were in town to video the children and teachers and speak to them about what they were doing. The news segments were aired that evening.
Marion residents as well as visitors will be reminded by the yellow ribbons to keep the soldiers in their thoughts and prayers.
