Thoughts of stars and planets

If my dear friend Phyllis Melton were here, I'm sure we would go out in the country Aug 27 to see the Red Planet, Mars, which is to come close to earth for the first time in 60,000 years.

Stars and planets remind me of the time on Aug. 10, 1926, that Ethel Gardner and I climbed Pike's Peak at night in order to be at the top to see the sunrise. For me, the most remarkable part of the trip was the closeness of the stars. I felt I could reach up and touch them. Later I learned that August is a wonderful month for star gazing, with lots of comets zipping across the sky.

I feel honored, I have just been invited to a picnic (Aug. 8) at the Marion County Lake. The hosts are the McPherson Abstract and Title Company and the Hannaford Abstract and Title Company. Having spent many years in that business myself, I guess they think I should be included. I appreciate their thoughtfulness.

I'm just starting a book named "American Road" by Pete Davies. It's a story about the beginning of the Lincoln Highway and its completion years later. After World War I, the government sent a convoy of trucks on a trip from New York to San Francisco. Eisenhower was involved. It is about driving from town to town or city to city and it took 60-some days. The automobile industry sponsored it so there is a lot about cars of that time. It is an adventure and historic story. I'll know more when I get farther into it.
