Tony Alt

Tony Alt, 84, a life-long resident of Herington, died Nov. 23, 2003, at Marion Manor.

Born March 1, 1919, at Herington, he was the son of John and Catherine (Loose) Alt.

On Oct. 16, 1953, he married Alyce E. "Beth" Hazlett at Oklahoma City, Okla.

He served as a private first class in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an interpreter stationed in Germany.

He was a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad before retiring in 1980.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Henry, Bill, Alex, Harry, A.A. "Toots," and Carl; and two sisters, Frieda Strickler and Mildred Elliott.

Survivors include his wife, Beth of Herington; a son, Johnny "Jay" Alt of El Dorado; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington, with Father Dale W. Plummer officiating.

Full military honors were provided by a special detail from Fort Riley.

A memorial has been established with the occupational therapy department of Herington Hospital.
