Trojans too much for Warrior girls

Sports reporter

With point guard Megan Hudson on the bench for the third straight game with a knee injury, Marion High School girls' basketball team fell to Hillsboro Friday 65-45 with just six regular players.

MHS actually used 10 girls in the game, but four of them played two minutes or less.

Toni Gordon and Allie Maddox each had 18 points, but it wasn't enough against the balanced Trojans.

Tina Frick led Hillsboro with 15 points on 7-9 shooting, and JuliAnne Chisholm and Hannah Marsh each had 12 points. Six other Trojans scored as well.

Although Maddox and Gordon scored their points, the Trojans focused all their pressure on the two seniors, finally wearing them down in the end.

The rest of the team scored just nine points.

"It was pretty easy to figure who was going to score," head coach Daryl Enos said.

The Warriors hung tough early trailing just 12-9 after one quarter, but were outscored 20-11 in the second.

"We just don't see the floor very well right now," Enos said. "Also, moving the ball is crucial and we tend to get stagnant."

A 17-8 third-quarter gave Hillsboro a 49-28 lead, and essentially the victory.

Enos refused to blame injuries on the loss. With Hudson out, he was forced to use different players at the point, and play some girls who had seen limited varsity action this season.

"We ought to be coming around by now," he said. "When we fall behind we tend to shut down, and we can't do that."

Enos did see some energy and fire from the younger girls who don't usually get in the game.

"They pumped up," he said.

He also liked what he saw out of senior Adrienne Chamberland who added two points and two steals.

"She played well," Enos said. "She got some steals and played hard all night."

Erin Carr added five points for Marion, and Kimber Hardey scored two points.

Hudson will likely miss some more time but her status is unknown.

Enos knows injuries are part of the game, and the team must fight without their senior floor leader on the court.

He also knows the team has to head in a different direction.

"We have to figure out what to do," he said.

MHS played host Tuesday to Smoky Valley and will travel Friday to take on Nickerson .
