Truckers beware
Immediate action was taken Monday by Marion County Commission regarding complaints and concerns of long-distance haulers using county roads.
For the time being, no through truck traffic will be allowed on Yarrow Road between K-150 and U.S.-50. A maximum $150 fine can be imposed for violations.
Due to road construction on U.S.-77, commercial drivers have taken to county roads — particularly Yarrow and Indigo — instead of following the designated detour set by Kansas Department of Transportation.
The main concern was truck traffic on Yarrow Road, a graveled road, that connects K-150 to U.S.-50.
Commissioner Dan Holub said recently he was on Yarrow Road and had to pull to the side after meeting a semi truck to wait for the dust settle.
"When I pulled out, another truck was coming," Holub said. He was particularly concerned with farm traffic.
Holub asked the commission to consider a resolution for no through truck traffic and reduce the speed limit.
"Even at 30 miles per hour, 18 wheels cause a lot of dust," said sheriff Lee Becker. "They have a right to be there."
He also mentioned the road was deteriorating due to increased truck traffic.
Commissioner Randy Dallke said he also has had complaints from residents regarding Yarrow.
County attorney Susan Robson said speed limit restrictions would apply to everyone but was willing to draw up whatever type of resolution they desired.
In the end, it was determined to limit use of Yarrow to local traffic only.
Becker asked if the commission wanted one deputy specifically assigned to patrol those county roads used as the unofficial detour.
The commission instructed him to patrol as usual.
