One might be surprised to find out that a couple of 11-year-olds sew their own clothing.
But that is exactly what twins Callie and Kailyn Riffel have done.
Both girls are enrolled in 4-H in purchased and constructed clothing. Prior to the Marion County Fair, their clothing in both categories was judged Thursday, and well awarded.
Callie presented her purchased clothing, including a pair of brown leggings, a jean skirt, two shirts, a pair of earrings, and a pair of shoes. After describing to judge Jean Winter why she bought the clothing and how she wore it she was awarded a blue ribbon.
Next up was Kailyn with her purchased clothing. Her choice of clothing consisted of two shirts, a pair of capris, and a pair of shoes. After the same routine of describing the outfits and why she chose them, she also was awarded a blue ribbon.
It's amazing to picture two 11-year-old girls sitting at home sewing in this day and age, but that time and effort paid off for both girls.
Callie and Kailyn each sewed a purse, an apron, and a skirt. Pat Brock, the constructed clothing judge, was impressed with each of the girls' project. Each received a blue ribbon for their purses and aprons. And to their surprise, they each were awarded purple ribbons for their skirts.
For the past four years the girls have worked together in their 4-H projects. They have done constructed clothing for four years and purchased clothing for three.
Callie's favorite project was her purse. It took her a couple of days to complete. "I saw the pattern in the store," she said. "I liked all the colors.
The skirt that received a purple ribbon was Kailyn's favorite constructed clothing. "I liked the material
The two girls also are enrolled in several other projects, including foods for four years, swine for four years, meat goats for two years, and arts and crafts for four years.
Just because the girls are twins doesn't mean they like all the same things.
Callie's favorite part of being in 4-H is the Marion County Fair, while Kailyn enjoys showing her animals.
The two girls are members of Tampa Triple T's. They are the daughters of Jeff and Tana Riffel of Lincolnville.
