Twister time
If Sunday night was any indication, I know some of us are not ready for tornado season. When the tornado sirens sounded Sunday evening, for the first time in at least five years, my better half and I were scrambling — trying to figure out where to go, getting the dog gathered up, etc., etc.
Since we don't have a basement in our house, we have to rely on the hospitality of our neighbors.
What was interesting about this particular "drill," was there was no information on any of the Wichita television or radio stations.
How could that be?!? All of that money spent on doppler equipment and 3D imaging gizmos, and no one could figure out there were tornadoes in Marion County.
Amazing!
Thank goodness for weather watchers who saw the funnel clouds and alerted authorities to the potential danger.
Another concern was that tornado sirens weren't working in some parts of the city. My daughter and sister, who live in the same general vicinity, reported not hearing the sirens. That's a pretty scary dilemma.
If you're like us and have to go elsewhere for shelter, have a place in the house that you can go in case there isn't time to go to the neighbor's house. Let family members know your plan so if there is a disaster, they will know where to locate you.
So, it looks like some of us failed the first drill of the tornado season.
The next time the sirens sound, we're going to be ready. Will you?
