USD 408 academic awards announced years ago

USD 408 recognized its outstanding students with awards assemblies.

Marion Elementary School

May students of the month were announced at an assembly Thursday. They were Grace Winter, Eli Smith, Lilly Collett, Evann Heidebrecht, Jacob Crabb, Shelby Wilhelm, Janson Garman, Abby Bell, Devin Regnier, Arlie Hernandez, Abby Kuster, Elizabeth Meyer, Dakota Funk, Derrick Ratzloff, Caitlyn Maloney, Devan Carr, and Clint Kroupa. Throughout the year, teachers select students of the month by using three criteria: be responsible, be respectful, and doing your best. Selected students receive gift certificates to Carlsons' Grocery, Casey's, Ampride, The Big Scoop, and SherBowl Lanes.

Winners of the spelling bee and geography bee also were announced. Their names will be placed on plaques that will hang in the lobby at MES. The spelling bee winner was Alicia Maloney. The geography bee winner was Timothy Knolla.

Class awards were distributed by Michelle Adkins, Staci Hansen, Shannon Cooper, Laura Baldwin, Kim Harden, and Cindy Vinduska.

The sixth grade Leadership Team and their accomplishments were recognized. Activities included a September retreat, adopt a classroom, gave two families $160 after each home was consumed by fire, sent goody boxes to soldiers serving in Iraq, helped start an exercising program during recess for fifth and sixth grade, had luncheon meetings, had a bake sale, sold carnations for Mother's Day with proceeds going toward MES improvements, held a party in February for all sixth graders, and worked with children in Head Start. One hundred percent of leadership members kept their grades above 80 percent for the entire school year.

Students with perfect attendance for the semester, as well as the year, were recognized. Those who had perfect attendance for the semester were Bret Voth, Bailey Robson, Elizabeth Meyer, Garrett Alleven, and Emily Ostmeyer. Robson was recognized for having perfect attendance for the year.

As part of DRAGNET, students wrote essays and the essay winner, Caitlyn Maloney, was announced. She received $50 from the police department.

Marion High School

Marion High School had its awards assembly May 14.

Scholarship recipients and special recognition awards were:

Tacy Taylor: Calvin Ray Hett Memorial Scholarship, J.L. and Ada Fruechting Memorial Scholarship, Agriculture Education and FFA award.

Kristin Waner: J.L. and Ada Fruechting Memorial Scholarship, Corey Darrow Memorial Scholarship, Marion County Farm Bureau Scholarship, Citizenship Award.

Brett Billings: Marion Advancement Campaign Scholarship, Chris Hauser & Sons Performing Arts Award, Charles Montgomery Scholarship, Citizenship Award.

Kalaya Jackson: Tampa State Bank scholarship, Stephen Bowers Memorial Scholarship.

Keith Jones: Tampa State Bank Scholarship.

Austin Percell: Marion Lions Club Community Service Award.

Erika Riggs: Marion Lions Club Community Service Award, Dean Pippin Memorial Scholarship.

Cassy Legg: P.E.O. Chapter DB Scholarship, Charles Montgomery Scholarship, Auburn University Scholarship.

Megan Schmidt: St. Luke Hospital Scholarship.

Jessica Vogel: Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Marion High School Endowed Scholarship, Bob Dole Scholarship, 2008 Academic All-State Team Honorable Mention.

Adam Trapp: Robin Scheideman Memorial Scholarship.

Zan Fine: Robin Scheideman Memorial Scholarship.

Hank Collett: Kansas ACT Scholar Award.

Derek Stuchlik: ESU State of Kansas Scholarship Contest.

Landon Leiker: ESU State of Kansas Scholarship Contest.

Patrick Hodson: ESU State of Kansas Scholarship Contest.

Students who received the President's Award of Educational Excellence were: Hank Collett, Brett Billings, Zach Helmstead, Patrick Hodson, Cassy Legg, Tacy Taylor, Matt Thierolf, and Jessica Vogel. Criteria for the award is to have a GPA above 3.5 and a score in the 85th percentile on the ACT in reading or math.

Kansas Scholars Curriculum completers were: Brett Billings, Hank Collett, Lauren Helmer, Zach Helmstead, Cassy Legg, Jonathan Nesser, Andrew Regalado, Megan Schmidt, Tacy Taylor, Michelle Vinduska, Jessica Vogel, and Kristin Waner.

Academic letters and bar recipients for the 2007-2008 school year were first year letter: Madison Chamberland, Olle Gemfors, Paul Hodson, Keith Jones, Landon Leiker, Adam Molleker, Dane Purkeypile, Derek Stuchlik, Colleen Tajchman, Eric Vogel, and Kayla Williams; second year lamp of knowledge: Jaclyn DeForest, Sam Ehrlich, Kayley Heerey, Ryan Jones, Cassy Legg, Drew Maddox, and Kaylyn Spencer; fourth year bar: Brett Billings, Hank Collett, and Kristin Waner.

Forensics

Outstanding forensicator: Cassy Legg.

Outstanding actor: Brett Billings.

FCCLA

Gold medal District G and gold medal state STAR event in creed: Tristen Snelling.

District G STAR event bronze medal in job interview: Audra Allen.

Debate

Debate academic awards: Adam Palic, Louis Holt, Levi Anderson, Sarah Guetersloh, Kayla Williams, Justin Herzet, Colton Olsen, and Chris Guetersloh.

Novices: Kayla Williams had the most No. 1 speaker points followed by Adam Palic and Louis Holt.

Advanced debaters: Justin Herzet received the most No. 1 speaker points during the season.
