USD 408 summary of board action years ago

Marion-Florence USD 408 Board of Education took action or made recommendations March 16 regarding the following items during the special meeting.

Because it was a special meeting, the board only could act on items which were on the agenda. Since several items were brought up that weren't on the agenda, the board only could indicate they planned to support the item when brought up again during the next meeting.

— Following a lengthy public discussion period and executive session regarding necessary budget cuts, the board approved 7-0 the non-renewal of the following support staff: Calvin Seadeek, custodian; Cathy Whitaker and Carole Sklenar, aides at Marion Elementary School, and Richard Pracht, bus driver.

The board also voted 7-0 to non-renew the teaching contracts of Carolyn Moore, Marion High School language arts; and Matt Robert, industrial education/computer applications instructor at MHS (see related story).

— Accepted the retirement of fourth grade teacher Linda Allison, and the resignation of Laurie Miesse, cook for Marion High/Marion Middle schools.

— Hired Penny Fugitt for the cook position at MMS and MHS.

— Approved offering summer school with a budget of $29,180.37 (see related story).

— Commended Marion High School head basketball coach, Rex Ostmeyer and the boys' basketball team for a successful season. Superintendent Gerry Henderson noted the boys were co-champions of the Cottonwood Valley League during its final year of existence. Board president Rex Savage thanked them for a good season and for "showing good sportsmanship and determination."

— Indicated they would approve a request from Marion Elementary School teacher Linda Allison seeking to raise funds for the family of a student who is being treated at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

— Indicated they would approve a snow makeup day for April 12, which will be the first day back to school following Easter break. Henderson said in past practice, the district has always made up one snow day. If there are more than one, the board has waived those days.

— Approved an out-of-district attendance request from Denise May allowing two children to attend USD 408. May is a Chase County resident who works for USD 408.

— Approved a request from Demitry Evancho, superintendent of Centre school district, allowing three Centre athletes to use Marion's pole vault facility. Henderson said Centre has proper insurance and a Rule 10 coach will accompany the students. Also if anything is broken, Centre will replace it.
