Vandalism hurts all of us
It's good to know that people are reading the Marion County Record. In this past week's issue there was a Your Turn comment about the restrooms in Central Park being closed. The comment got results, or at least an answer.
And the answer is the bathrooms are closed because of the selfish actions of a few individuals.
Isn't that a shame? It's too bad there are individuals vandalizing public restrooms. It's too bad they have to practice their despicable behavior here in Marion. What's even worse is if they are Marion residents.
Unfortunately, it's not the first time the park has been vandalized.
A few years ago, we had an attractive path around the edge of the park, lined with gas lamps. But, a few unsavory individuals decided the lamps were there for their amusement and proceeded to vandalize them. So, the city, instead of repairing the lights, and in a cost-saving effort, chose to remove them.
So, no more lamps.
All because some people are selfish, destructive, and harmful.
We understand the frustration of the families who visit the park and cannot use the restrooms. We also understand the frustration of city officials who have to keep repairing and replacing things every time those vandals strike. It's getting costly.
A reply to the Your Turn comment from city administrator David Mayfield states, "The City of Marion regrets to inform the public that the bathrooms are locked to prevent additional damage.
"It is a shame that with the addition of the new playground equipment and increased traffic in the park, that a small group of disrespectful citizens can impact everyone else."
He urges everyone to pay attention and report any misconduct you see happening in the park. And, if you know who the vandals are, contact Marion Police Department at 382-2651. All information will remain confidential.
Central Park is the showpiece of the town. It belongs to all of us and we should be able to enjoy and use it as it was intended.
As for you vandals — sooner or later, your actions will catch up with you.
