A gym full of people gathered Friday at Centre Elementary School to honor area veterans.
The program got off to a rousing start and patriotic feelings surged as the crowd sang the National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
A 10-member Centre High School choir sang "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "American Tears."
At least 14 area veterans introduced themselves and described their military service. Every branch of the U.S. Armed Services was represented, including veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Fifth and sixth grade students presented a musical about the heroes of the Revolutionary War, beginning with Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Instructor Lynley Remy announced that eight crates of goods donated by people in the school district were sent to Simon Makovec's military unit in Iraq.
Phyllis Burns read an e-mail from Makovec expressing the troops' appreciation. He said the snacks they received were gone in minutes.
The program concluded with group singing of patriotic favorites such as "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "This Land is Your Land."
Afterward, the vets and their spouses enjoyed cookies and punch in the lunchroom. In conjunction with the program, Gail and Marissa Makovec presented a display of a trunkful of Iraqi-made items sent to them by Simon. It included floor rugs, a tea set, money, a vase, watches, and a men's tunic, scarf, and head gear.
