Voter registration ends Monday
Voter registration ends at 5 p.m. Monday for the Aug. 6 primary election.
Any resident 18 or older on Aug. 6 should register now. Anyone who has changed their name or place of residence since they last voted must re-register.
Only those registered as a Democrat or Republican can vote in the primary, and only in the party in which they are registered.
Voter registration forms are available at the county clerk's office in the courthouse, Social Rehabilitation Services office in Marion, banks in Goessel, Burns, Durham, Lincolnville, and Tampa, post offices in Lehigh, Lost Springs, and Ramona, and city clerk's offices in Florence, Hillsboro, Peabody, and Marion.
A list of candidates appears as a legal notice elsewhere in this issue.
For the Republican party, primary races with two or more candidates include the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Pat Roberts; governor; attorney general; state treasurer; insurance commissioner; and 7th District state board of education.
Republicans who are unopposed in the primary include First District Congressman Jerry Moran; Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh; 70th District Rep. Don Dahl; and county commissioner Bob Hein.
For the Democratic party, the only primary race affecting Marion County is the Fourth District. A small portion of the county is in the Fourth. All other positions are unopposed or no candidates have filed.
Township clerks will be on the ballot as well.
Precinct committeeman and committeewoman will be on the primary ballot only. Many positions are open and could be filled by write-in candidates. Precinct positions do not advance to the general election.
Advance ballots for the primary are available this week. Applications are available in person or by mail by contacting the county clerk's office.
The deadline to complete an advance ballot in person is noon Aug. 5. All advance ballots must be returned to the clerk's office by 7 p.m. Aug. 6 to be counted.
