Walter Pope

Walter Warren Pope, 80, Lebanon, Ore., died Aug. 9, 2003, at his home.

Born Nov. 4, 1922, he was a native of Durham and the son of Reuben and Enid (Powers) Pope.

He lived on a farm during his childhood and graduated from Durham High School in 1940.

He attended Kansas State University, worked at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, attended Colorado State University, and graduated from Oregon State University with a BS in entomology.

Warren married JoAnn Staggs of Harrisburg, Ore., on Dec. 15, 1956.

He worked throughout his career as a log scaler for Columbia River Log Scaling Bureau until retiring in 1985.

Warren and JoAnn established and operated the Santiam Apple Orchard until 1994. They then developed a large 400 tree Chestnut orchard.

He enjoyed golfing with his family, hunting and fishing, and working in his orchards.

He was a member of the Pineway Golf Club, Wild Turkey Federation, Lebanon Fly Fishers, and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; sons, Donald and Gary of Lebanon, Ore., and Brian of Portland, Ore.; brothers, Wayne of Watertown, S.D., and Randall of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and sister, Vivian Mueller of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ethelyn Dee and Lucille Lee; and brother, Donald Dean.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Evergreen Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
