Walter Teetzen

Walter Eugene Teetzen, 72, Junction City, died Nov. 24, 2003, at Geary Community Hospital, Junction City.

Born Feb. 2, 1931, at Tampa, he was the son of Walter F.G. and Katherina (Hill) Teetzen.

He attended Tampa Grade School and graduated from Tampa High School with the class of 1950.

He joined the U.S. Army on Sept. 21, 1951, at Kansas City, Mo. He served one tour in Korea with the 40th Division Artillery and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Overseas Bar, and the U.N. Service Medal. He was discharged Sept. 20, 1953, at Fort Sheridan, Ill., with the rank of sergeant.

Following his discharge he worked for Greeley Gas Company in Herington.

On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Faye Janet Gugler at Lyona United Methodist Church.

They lived in Herington until 1964, then moved to a farm in the Lyona community where he was a grain farmer and stockman.

In 1985 he retired from farming and went to work for the Kansas Department of Transportation until 1996. He worked as a heavy machine operator for several years.

During his retirement he did road maintenance for Rinehart Township and served as the Rinehart Township treasurer for many years until his death. He was a member of Lyona United Methodist Church and had served on the board of trustees. He was a member of Chapman American Legion Post #240, the National Farmers Organization, and assisted in the family business of professional dog raising and breeding.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Survivors include his wife, Faye; a son, Douglas Teetzen of Olathe; two daughters, Deborah Swank of Ottawa and Lisa Eickholt of rural Geary County; a sister, Mildred Albrecht of Emporia; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at Lyona United Methodist Church, rural Junction City, with Pastor Marilyn Cox officiating.

Burial was in the Lyona Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with the church or the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University.
