It was cold and windy even for the first event of the year, but it didn't stop Marion High School golf team from blowing away the competition.
The Warriors won the four-man team event, while Travis Hett (third), Keith Jones (fifth), and Chase Carlson (ninth), all earned medals.
"The conditions were terrible and we could have done better," head coach Rex Ostmeyer said, "but it was still pretty good for the first meet."
Scores were high across the board, and reigning 3A state champ Hett's 81 was high for the senior. Still, the Warriors managed four golfers in double digits, even without sophomore Luke Gordon.
"Golf is a funny game," Ostmeyer said. "The best player doesn't always win."
That doesn't mean he and the Warriors aren't expecting to hang with anybody and everybody they compete against.
"We think we can win every event we compete in," he said. "That includes league, regionals, and state."
Other scores from the meet were Jake Bredemeier with 89, Paul Hodson 106, and newcomer Lindsay Hett, 112.
Ostmeyer thinks everyone should improve by the end of the season, and doesn't see why this year couldn't be a success.
"We had a heck of a good team last year," he said. "And we didn't lose anybody. We have the same group of kids."
MHS was scheduled to play in the Hillsboro invitational Thursday, but the weather had other ideas, pushing the tournament to tomorrow (Thursday) instead. They also will compete at 3 p.m. Monday at the Council Grove invitational.
