Warrior volleyball splits with Hesston, finishes 5-3 in league

Sports reporter

Marion High School Warriors volleyball team finished league play Oct. 11 with a two-game split at Hesston.

The 1-1 night gave MHS a 6-4 record in the Mid-Central Activities Association and 12-11 overall.

It seemed like it could be a long night for MHS after dropping the first two games in the first match, 25-7, 25-14.

Senior Toni Gordon had six of the team's eight kills in the match, and added a service ace.

Marion came out fired up in the second match, and pulled off two close victories, 25-23, 25-23.

Gordon once again added six kills, but junior Erin Carr had a team high seven, and senior Megan Hudson had five.

After serving just 73 percent in the first match, the Warriors served 100 percent in the second match, a stat that would make it tough for any team to beat them.

On the defensive side Hudson led the team with seven digs and senior Emalee Versch and junior Kari Tajchman had five each.

Trojan invitational

The Warriors did not fare as well Saturday at the Trojan invitational.

They ran into Hillsboro in the first round, winning game one, 25-19. After dropping game two, the Warriors battled to extra points with the Trojans, eventually falling 27-25.

The team ran out of gas after the match falling to Hoisington in two games and Herington in three, to finish the day 0-3.

The Warriors now sit at 12-14, and played their final regular season matches Tuesday at the Nickerson quad.

The Warriors will travel to Hoisington Saturday to compete in sub-state. The single-elimination tournament requires three victories to reach the state tournament.
