Warriors advance to state track meet
Strong senior leadership netted the Marion boys track team a fourth-place finish Friday at the Class 3A regional track meet held in Marion.
The squad finished tied for fourth place with Halstead, compiling 40 points total.
Joel Versch paced the Warrior team with third-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Versch finished the 110-meter hurdles in 15.7 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 42.8 seconds.
Zac Ewert, the teams' distance specialist, nabbed a third-place finish in the 3200-meter run in 10:32.6.
Steven Boone took third in the shot put with a throw of 46'9 3/4", while Alan Vogel finished fourth with a throw of 46'5 1/4".
Tyler Smith finished fourth in the discus with a 142" throw.
Freshman Casey Nelson tied for third in the pole vault with a Cheney competitor, both finished with vaults of 12'3".
The Marion girls finished 12th overall in the meet, scoring six points.
Versch will lead-off the Warriors at the state meet competiting in the 110-meter hurdle preliminary event at 9:20 a.m. on Friday.
At 11:30 Casey Nelson will compete in the pole vault event, and Steven Boone and Alan Vogel will compete in the shot put event.
About an hour later, Versch will compete in the preliminary event for the 300-meter hurdles. The scheduled time for the event is 12:10 p.m.
Smith will round-out competition for the Warriors on Friday, competiting in the discuss event at 3 p.m.
On Saturday at 8:30 a.m., Ewert will compete in the 3200-meter run.
If Versch qualifies after in his preliminary events on Friday, the senior will compete in the 110-meter hurdle finals at 11:30 in the morning on Saturday and 300-meter hurdle finals at 6 p.m. in the evening.
