Shooting just 29 percent from the field for the game, the Warriors found themselves playing a game of catch-up Saturday afternoon against Berean Academy at the Eli J. Walter girls' basketball tournament. They eventually paid for it with a 76-47 loss.

In the first quarter, the Warriors traded baskets with their adversaries, outscoring the Berean Academy Warriors 13-12.

But in the second quarter, the Marion offensive touch went south, while Berean rattled off 21 points, taking a 12-point lead into the locker room at half-time. Things only got better for the Warrior hosts. Berean scored 43 points in the final two quarters of play to Marion's 26, including an MHS quarter of 10 points in the third. Two of Berean's players combined for 46 of the Warriors' 76 points.

A 14-for-47 performance from the field, a 1-for-4 performance from behind the arc, and a 16-for-27 night at the free-throw line, marked a myriad of problems the Warriors faced Saturday at the tourney.

Warrior sharpshooter Brandi Peterie-Shipman scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the loss. No other Warrior scored in the double figures during the contest. Caitlyn O'Dell, Sarah Williams, and Allie Maddox each had eight points.

Centre

Brandi Petrie-Shipman and Sarah Williams combined for 27 points Feb. 3 to help propel the Marion girls' basketball team to a 56-42 victory over the Centre Cougars. Despite a combined 27 points equaled by tandem Jill Fenske and Megan Gutsch, the Cougars were unable to hold down the Warrior offense.

Initially, the game exhibited signs of being an all-out war, as Centre jumped out to an early 17-11 lead in the first quarter. The Warriors battled back in the second quarter to close the margin to one point before half-time. Marion trailed 24-23.

After intermission, the Warrior defense corralled the Cougars, holding the team to just four points in the third quarter, while scoring 15 points of their own.

Marion used the strong third quarter as momentum heading into the final quarter. The Warriors outscored the Cougars 18-14 to hold off Centre and claim the 14-point win.

Marion shot 34 percent from the field for the game, 17 percent from behind the arc, and 56 percent from the free-throw line.

Marion's Petrie-Shipman scored 17 points to lead all scorers. The senior was 5-for-13 from the field and 7-for-13 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down 15 rebounds, while snagging five steals dishing out an assist. Williams finished with 10 points, seven boards, and an assist in the Warrior win. Williams shot 2-for-7 from the field and was nearly perfect from the free throw line with a 6-for-7 performance.

Centre's Fenske scored 15 points in the Cougar loss, while Gutsch added 12.
