Warriors fall to TMP in first round
Marion Warriors lost to Thomas More Prep, Hays, Monday in the first round of the Trojan Classic at Hillsboro.
The two teams were pretty evenly matched during the first quarter, which ended with Marion down by three, 13-16.
From then on, the Warriors gradually fell farther behind, ending the half with the score 25-33, and the third quarter, 34-49.
Despite a comeback in the fourth quarter, in which Marion outscored Thomas Prep 15 to 10, the Warriors were unable to bridge the gap. The final score was Thomas More 59, Marion 49.
Coach Rex Ostmeyer noted two things which cost Marion the game.
"We turned the ball over way too many times," he said, noting that the 19 turnovers allowed TMP 12 more shots.
"During the first three minutes of the second half, we played the worst we have played all season," Ostmeyer said.
The team was down by 16 at the end of the third quarter.
"On the positive side," he added, "the team did crawl back to cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter."
The Warriors scored 41.9 percent from two-point range compared to 47.5 by TMP. However, they completed three of seven three-point attempts compared to three of 10 by TMP. The two teams were about even from the free throw line, with Bina completing six of six, Mitch Enos four of four, and Tyler Stubenhofer, two of two.
Bina and Jason Matz scored in double digits, with 12 points each. Alan Vogel led in rebounding, with 10.
